How to cancel giffgaff

To cancel giffgaff, turn off auto-renew on your plan — the toggle under your active plan in the app, or Orders and payments online — so nothing charges again, then text PAC to 65075 to move your number or STAC to 75075 to close it. There's no notice period; codes arrive within about 60 seconds and last 30 days.

Your current plan runs to the end of its month; with auto-renew off nothing renews after that. A ported number moves when your new provider uses the PAC.
Contract / fees
There is no minimum term to buy out — giffgaff's plans are rolling monthly bundles that renew on a saved card or PayPal, and its help pages document switching renewal off as a toggle rather than a request. That billing shape matters: a renewing card payment is a continuous payment authority, not a Direct Debit, so the fallback if a charge ever slips through is your card issuer — see /answers/what-is-continuous-payment-authority. The other clock to know about: giffgaff documents that after 6 months of no activity your account information remains, but the phone number stops being available if it hasn't been ported out.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you just want to stop paying (turn off auto-renew)

  1. 1

In the app: go to the homescreen, find Auto-renew beneath your active plan, switch the toggle to OFF, and save the change.

  2. 2

Online: log in, tap + Account then Orders and payments, scroll to Next mobile plan, select Change, toggle auto renew off, then Save settings.

  3. 3

Your current plan runs to the end of its month; no new plan starts and no new charge is taken.

  4. 4

To make renewals impossible, giffgaff also documents removing your saved card: Account > Payments > Remove this credit/debit card, and confirm.

  • Renewals charge a saved credit/debit card or PayPal account — a continuous payment authority rather than a Direct Debit. If a payment ever needs stopping at source, the card-issuer route is explained at /answers/what-is-continuous-payment-authority.

If you're moving your number to another network (PAC)

  1. 1

Text PAC to 65075 from your giffgaff phone — it's free, and giffgaff says you should receive the code within 60 seconds. Alternatives it documents: call 43431 or use your profile and settings page.

  2. 2

Be in the UK when you ask — giffgaff requires it for PAC and STAC requests.

  3. 3

Give the PAC to your new network within 30 days; they cancel your giffgaff account and move the number across.

  4. 4

Turn off auto-renew too, so a plan doesn't renew while the port is pending.

  • Left already? giffgaff gives you up to 30 days from leaving to request a PAC, valid for a further 30 days from issue.
  • Because you're porting away, giffgaff's cancellation article notes the account can close immediately rather than waiting out the 6-month inactivity period.

If you're leaving and don't want the number (STAC)

  1. 1

Text STAC to 75075 — free, with the code back in about 60 seconds — or call 43431, or use your profile and settings page.

  2. 2

Give the STAC to your new provider within its 30-day validity.

  3. 3

Understand what it does: giffgaff says a STAC permanently cancels your number after you've switched, and the number gets recycled to a new giffgaff member.

  4. 4

Turn auto-renew off and remove payment details so nothing renews in the meantime.

  • No new provider at all? Then no code is needed — switch off auto-renew, remove your card, and let the SIM go quiet; only the number is lost after 6 months of inactivity.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I turned off auto-renew but I'm worried a queued plan will still start.

Check Orders and payments for a Next mobile plan entry — giffgaff's cancellation article treats turning off the recurring plan, deleting payment details and removing auto top-up as separate steps, and doing all three leaves nothing that can charge.

I'm abroad and can't get a PAC.

That's a documented restriction — giffgaff says you need to be in the UK to request a PAC or STAC. Either wait until you're back, or plan around it: the code lasts 30 days once issued, and you can still request a PAC up to 30 days after leaving.

My old giffgaff number no longer works and I wanted to keep it.

If the SIM has gone more than 6 months without activity, giffgaff documents that it's automatically deactivated and the number stops being available when it hasn't been ported. Its PAC article adds one lifeline: within 30 days of deactivation you can still ask giffgaff's agents for a PAC to move the number to another UK network. Past that, it can't be promised back.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • With auto-renew off, your current plan runs out at month end and no new charge is taken.
  • A PAC given to your new network moves the number and closes the giffgaff account immediately — no 6-month wait.
  • A used STAC closes the service and the number is permanently cancelled, then recycled to a new member.
  • An account left dormant keeps its information, but the number stops being available after 6 months without activity.

Refund notes

  • giffgaff's cancellation and auto-renew articles document no refund of a plan already started — the plan simply runs to the end of its month once renewal is off. What the pages document is prevention: toggle auto-renew off before the next plan starts, and remove the saved card so nothing can charge.

FAQ

How do I cancel my giffgaff plan so it stops charging?

Turn off auto-renew: in the app, the Auto-renew toggle sits beneath your active plan on the homescreen; online, go to + Account > Orders and payments > Next mobile plan > Change, toggle auto renew off and Save settings. Your current plan finishes its month and nothing renews. giffgaff also documents removing your saved card under Account > Payments if you want renewals impossible.

How do I get a PAC code from giffgaff?

Text PAC to 65075 from your giffgaff phone — it's free and giffgaff says the code arrives within about 60 seconds. You can also call 43431 or request it from your profile and settings page. It's valid for 30 days, you must be in the UK to ask, and if you've already left you have up to 30 days to request one.

Does giffgaff have a contract or notice period to cancel?

No — giffgaff's plans are rolling monthly bundles with no minimum term documented anywhere in its cancellation help. Ending it is a settings toggle plus, if you're moving networks, a free PAC or STAC text. The only deadline worth knowing is the plan's own renewal date, since a plan already started runs its month.

What happens to my giffgaff number if I just stop using the SIM?

giffgaff documents that after 6 months of no activity your account information remains available, but the phone number does not — it stops being available if it hasn't been ported out. If the number matters to you, text PAC to 65075 and move it before going quiet.

Will giffgaff still charge my card after I cancel my plan?

Not if auto-renew is off before the next plan starts — the renewal charge only fires when a new plan begins, against your saved card or PayPal. giffgaff's own pages document removing the card (Account > Payments > Remove this credit/debit card) as the definitive stop. As a recurring card payment, it can also be stopped at your card issuer — see /answers/what-is-continuous-payment-authority.
