How to cancel Virgin Media (UK)

Virgin Media is a UK contract service: you can cancel at any time by giving 30 days' notice, but you keep paying through that notice period. Cancel before your minimum term (normally 24 months) ends and an early disconnection fee is charged for the months left after the 30 days.

Contract / fees
Virgin Media's leaving page states: "Unless stated otherwise, you can cancel your service at any time by giving us 30 days' notice." It says your minimum term "will normally be 24 months", with the specifics in the Contract Information and Contract Summary forms you were given, and that once the minimum term ends the service continues on a rolling monthly basis and you can cancel with 30 days' notice and no early disconnection fee. Virgin Media's early disconnection fees page puts the typical range wider — "anything between 6 to 24 months" — and confirms "all customers can cancel their Virgin Media service at any point", with a fee if you do it inside the minimum period. Crucially, that page states the fee sits on top of the notice: "all fees apply after the standard 30-day notice period", so a cancellation with five months left means 30 days of paid service and then a fee covering the remaining four months.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If your minimum term has already ended

  1. 1

Confirm your minimum term has finished — Virgin Media says the contract then continues on a rolling monthly basis.

  2. 2

Go to virginmedia.com/help/leaving and use "View contact options", or call 150 from a Virgin Media phone (0345 454 1111 from any other phone).

  3. 3

State that you are giving 30 days' notice to cancel, and get the disconnection date confirmed.

  4. 4

Save anything you need from your Virgin Media email address before the account closes.

  5. 5

Return the equipment by the collection or free returns pack Virgin Media arranges, then check and pay the closing bill.

  • Virgin Media says that out of the minimum term "you can cancel at any time without paying any early disconnection fees – you just need to give us 30 days' notice".
  • Virgin Media keeps its switching guidance in a separate “Switching to another provider” section of the leaving page rather than in the cancellation steps, so if you are moving to a new provider, confirm with them what their switch covers before you also cancel directly.

If you are still inside your minimum period

  1. 1

Work out how many months of your minimum period remain — Virgin Media says a minimum term is typically anything between 6 and 24 months.

  2. 2

Use the percentage tables and calculation worksheet on Virgin Media's early disconnection fees page to estimate the charge, or ask Virgin Media for an exact calculation.

  3. 3

Contact Virgin Media and give 30 days' notice, asking it to confirm the fee in writing before the cancellation is booked.

  4. 4

Remember the sequence: Virgin Media says the fee applies after the 30-day notice period, so you pay for the notice month and are then charged for the months still left.

  5. 5

Return the kit and settle the closing bill, which will include the fee.

  • Virgin Media's worked example: "if you wish to cancel your contract with 5 months remaining, then you'd provide 30 days' notice. In that period, you would retain (and continue to pay for) your services and then be charged an Early Disconnection Fee for your remaining 4 months."
  • Virgin Media says VAT has been charged on early disconnection fees since 1 April 2022, in line with HMRC requirements.
  • If you have an O2 mobile contract as well, Virgin Media points you to O2's own mobile agreement for its early termination charges.

If you are within 14 days of taking out the contract

  1. 1

Check the start of your window — Virgin Media says the 14 days run from the latest of the day after equipment is delivered, the service start date, or the day you received a copy of the terms for that service.

  2. 2

Contact Virgin Media inside those 14 days and say you are cancelling under the Consumer Contracts Regulations.

  3. 3

Choose your disconnection timing: Virgin Media says you can have the service disconnected within 30 days of giving notice, or immediately if you prefer.

  4. 4

Expect to pay for services already provided — Virgin Media says that because you asked it to start supplying as soon as possible, you may need to pay for what you have already had.

  5. 5

Return the equipment when Virgin Media arranges it.

  • Virgin Media says this right applies to contracts taken out online, by email, by phone, or where a member of the team came to your home, and that you cancel "for any reason and without paying an early disconnection fee".
  • Virgin Media warns that if you keep other Virgin Media services, any discounts, offers or benefits linked to the cancelled service may no longer apply.

Expect a retention offer

  • Virgin Media's leaving page puts retention before the exit: "We're sorry you want to leave us. If it's because you're unhappy with our service, we may be able to fix things", followed by the service status tool and an invitation to change package, before any cancellation route.
  • The page's contact routes are behind a "View contact options" button rather than published inline, so you cannot see the cancellation channel without opening the widget.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I asked to leave and was told the 30 days had not started yet.

The notice only runs from the point Virgin Media records it, which is why the date matters. Ask the agent to confirm in writing on the day: the date notice was given, the disconnection date 30 days later, and the fee if any. Virgin Media says it will tell you how much an early disconnection fee will be before you cancel.

The early disconnection fee is bigger than I expected.

Check what it is actually covering. Virgin Media says the fee applies after the standard 30-day notice period, so it covers the months left once the notice has run — not the notice month itself, which you also pay for. Use the percentage tables and worksheet on Virgin Media's early disconnection fees page to check the arithmetic, or ask Virgin Media for an exact calculation.

I am switching to another broadband provider — do I still have to cancel Virgin Media myself?

Check with the new provider first. Virgin Media keeps switching guidance in a separate section of its leaving page from the cancellation steps, so ask the new provider in writing which services their switch actually covers. If it does not cover the TV or phone element, cancel that part with Virgin Media directly, giving 30 days' notice.

I moved to an address Virgin Media does not cover and was charged a fee anyway.

Virgin Media documents a route back: if you move outside its network area but stay within the UK, it says the fee can be credited back once you provide valid evidence of the new address, which it checks and responds to within 30 days. Send the evidence and ask for the credit explicitly rather than waiting for it.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Your services run for the 30-day notice period and stop on the agreed disconnection date.
  • Virgin Media sends a closing bill covering service costs and usage charges up to the disconnection date, plus any early disconnection fee.
  • Virgin Media either arranges to collect the equipment from you or sends a pack to return it free of charge.
  • Access to any emails on your Virgin Media account ends 90 days after disconnection, so save anything you need before then.
  • If you want to keep your home phone number, Virgin Media says to check with your new provider before the services are disconnected — not after.

Refund notes

  • Virgin Media documents no refund for the notice period — you keep and pay for the service until the disconnection date, and the closing bill covers service costs and usage charges up to that date.
  • Where an early disconnection fee has been charged after a move outside Virgin Media's network area but still within the UK, Virgin Media says it is possible to be credited back: send valid evidence of your new address and it will check and get back to you within 30 days, crediting the value to your account.
  • Virgin Media says it may in some cases credit a cancellation charge back to you, and that its team will explain the process so you only pay what you need to. Get any such agreement in writing.

FAQ

How much notice does Virgin Media need to cancel broadband or TV?

30 days. Virgin Media's leaving page says "you can cancel your agreement at any time by giving 30 days' notice", and that once your minimum term has ended you can cancel with that notice and no early disconnection fee. During those 30 days you keep the service and keep paying for it.

How does Virgin Media work out an early disconnection fee?

Virgin Media says the fee depends on which services you have, what you pay for them including discounts, and how much of the minimum period is left, and it publishes percentage tables and a calculation worksheet. Its worked example: cancel with five months remaining and you give 30 days' notice, pay for that month, then pay a fee covering the remaining four months. VAT has been charged on these fees since 1 April 2022.

Can I cancel Virgin Media online without phoning anyone?

Virgin Media publishes no self-serve cancel button. Its leaving page routes you through a "View contact options" button, and gives 150 from a Virgin Media phone (0345 454 1111 from any other phone) as the number to call. Whichever route you use, say explicitly that you are giving 30 days' notice and ask for the disconnection date in writing.

Do I have to return my Virgin Media router and TV box?

Usually yes. Virgin Media says on its leaving page: "We'll either arrange to come round and collect it from you or we'll send you a pack to return it free of charge." Wait for that arrangement rather than posting anything yourself, and keep proof of the collection or return.

What happens to my Virgin Media email address after I cancel?

It expires. Virgin Media says "You'll lose access to any emails on your Virgin Media account after 90 days once you've been disconnected." Before the notice period ends, move anything important to another address, and change the contact address on any accounts that still use it.

Can I cancel Virgin Media in the first 14 days without a fee?

Yes, if you took out the contract online, by email, by phone, or with a team member at your home. Virgin Media says you can cancel within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations for any reason without an early disconnection fee, and can be disconnected within 30 days of giving notice or immediately if you prefer. You may still pay for services already provided.
