What Happens to My Cloud DVR Recordings If I Cancel?

Recordings behave differently from a watchlist because they are a different kind of thing. A watchlist is a pointer to a title in a catalog, cheap to store and harmless to keep; a cloud DVR recording is a licensed copy of a broadcast that the service is only permitted to hold for you while you are a paying subscriber of that live-TV package. That makes it an entitlement, not account data. Recordings expire even while you keep paying: YouTube TV applies a standard nine-month expiration from the air date, so a series you recorded two seasons ago is already thinning out. Cancellation just accelerates a clock that was always running, and it is the reason a DVR library is the least durable thing a streaming account holds.

YouTube TV publishes the clearest numbers. Cancel, and you keep access until the end of your payment or free-trial period, after which recorded programs in your library expire after 21 days; YouTube TV says it saves your library preferences in case you sign up again, which is not the same as saving the recordings. Pausing is materially different and much kinder: a pause runs from four weeks up to six months, takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and your previous recordings are saved until the pause ends — still subject to that nine-month expiration. Do not assume another provider matches those numbers. Hulu's Cloud DVR help center gives a blunter warning: if a subscription is canceled, suspended, interrupted, or otherwise discontinued, you may lose access to recordings you already made, even if the subscription later resumes or is reinstated. Sling, Fubo, and cable operators each set their own rule, and some delete on the day the subscription lapses with no grace period at all. The governing sentence is on the provider's DVR or cancellation help page rather than inside the cancel flow, so find it, note the exact date your access ends, and work backwards from there. Then act before that date, because afterwards nothing can be done. Cloud DVR content is DRM-protected and generally cannot be downloaded or exported, and the offline-download feature some live-TV apps offer usually covers on-demand titles rather than your recordings. That leaves three honest options: watch what matters while you still have access, buy a permanent copy of anything available for purchase, or pause instead of cancel where the service allows it.
