How to cancel The Atlantic

The Atlantic lets you cancel yourself online: sign in to your account, open Subscription, then Manage Subscription, and choose Cancel. No phone call or chat is required. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current term — you keep full access and any remaining print issues until then, but The Atlantic does not refund unused time.

Contract / fees
The Atlantic's Terms of Sale state that, except where otherwise noted, each subscription term is one year, and renewing plans recur annually or every two years depending on the option chosen at checkout. There is no early-termination fee: you may cancel at any time, and cancellation simply stops future scheduled payments. To avoid being charged for a further term, the cancellation must be completed before the current term ends. The Atlantic says it gives notice of current prices in advance of a renewal date, and that a price change during an active term does not add fees to that term. Subscriptions bought through a third party (Apple App Store, Google Play) are governed by that third party's billing, cancellation and refund terms, and The Atlantic states it cannot initiate, amend, cancel or refund them on a customer's behalf.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Cancel online in your Atlantic account

  1. 1

Sign in to your account at accounts.theatlantic.com. If you have never signed in before, create an online account first using the email address on the subscription.

  2. 2

If you are a subscriber but no subscription is listed, follow The Atlantic's "Connect your subscription to your account" help article to link it before continuing.

  3. 3

From your account homepage, select "Subscription" in the menu on the left side of the screen, then select "Manage Subscription".

  4. 4

In the Manage Subscription section, select "Cancel" and confirm.

  5. 5

Complete this before your current term ends — The Atlantic states that to avoid charges for a further term, cancellation must be made before the end of the current term. Cancellation then takes effect at the end of that term.

Ask Customer Care to cancel for you

  1. 1

Open The Atlantic's help center and submit a request at support.theatlantic.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.

  2. 2

Give the email address and mailing address on the account and state that you want the subscription cancelled and not renewed.

  3. 3

Customer Care hours listed by The Atlantic are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM ET.

  4. 4

The Atlantic's Terms of Sale also list a Customer Care phone line at +1 (855) 940-0585. The (202) 266-6000 number on the contact page is described as being for general inquiries not related to customer service.

  5. 5

Keep the confirmation reply as proof of the cancellation date.

Cancel a subscription billed by Apple

  1. 1

If you bought through the Apple App Store, there is no Cancel button in your Atlantic account — The Atlantic states it cannot cancel a third-party subscription on your behalf.

  2. 2

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and tap your name at the top.

  3. 3

Tap Subscriptions, then select The Atlantic.

  4. 4

Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm. Access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.

  5. 5

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by The Atlantic.

Cancel a subscription billed by Google Play

  1. 1

Subscriptions bought in the Google Play Store must be cancelled there; The Atlantic states it cannot cancel them for you.

  2. 2

Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon in the top corner.

  3. 3

Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.

  4. 4

Select The Atlantic and tap Cancel subscription, then confirm.

  5. 5

Access continues to the end of the period already paid for; refunds are handled by Google.

Stop an Atlantic gift subscription from renewing

  1. 1

Sign in to the Atlantic account you used to buy the gift — not the recipient's account.

  2. 2

Find the gift subscription and switch "Automatically renew your gift" to the off position. The Atlantic notes gift subscriptions are set to renew by default once they are sent.

  3. 3

With renewal off, the gift ends after the current term and you are not charged again.

  4. 4

If you cannot find the toggle, contact Customer Care through the help center request form and ask them to stop the gift renewal.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Your subscription stops renewing and you are not charged again at the end of the current term.
  • You keep unlimited access to TheAtlantic.com, the app, the archive and other subscriber benefits through the end of that term.
  • Print & Digital subscribers continue receiving the print issues already paid for through the end of the term.
  • No refund or credit is issued for the time remaining in the term, except where local law requires one.
  • If you cancelled through Apple or Google instead, access runs to the end of the period already paid for in that store.

Refund notes

  • The Atlantic's help center and Terms of Sale both state that a canceled subscription is not refunded: payments are non-refundable and cancellation does not entitle you to a refund or credit for time remaining in the term, except where required by law. The Atlantic notes it may issue refunds or credits at its own discretion. Jurisdiction-specific exceptions are documented: EU and UK residents have a 14-day right of withdrawal from a digital subscription with a full refund and immediate cancellation; German residents may obtain a prorated refund if they give 30 days' notice, with the refund reduced by that notice period; Quebec residents may obtain a prorated refund that can be subject to a cancellation fee of up to 10% of the refund, capped at CAD $50. Check current terms for your own region before assuming a refund applies.

FAQ

Can I cancel The Atlantic without talking to anyone?

Yes. The Atlantic documents a self-serve path: sign in to your account, choose Subscription, then Manage Subscription, then select Cancel. Unlike some news publishers, it does not force you into a phone call or a chat queue, though Customer Care can cancel for you if you prefer.

Does The Atlantic refund the rest of my year if I cancel early?

Generally no. The Atlantic's Terms of Sale say payments are non-refundable and that cancellation does not entitle you to a refund or credit for time remaining in your term, except where required by law. You keep full access until the term ends. EU, UK, German and Quebec subscribers have separate documented rights.

I subscribed to The Atlantic through the App Store — why is there no Cancel button in my account?

Because Apple, not The Atlantic, holds that billing relationship. The Atlantic states it cannot initiate, amend, cancel or refund a third-party subscription for you. Cancel it in Settings on your iPhone or iPad under your name, then Subscriptions, then The Atlantic.

Will I still get the print magazine after I cancel The Atlantic?

Yes, until your term runs out. The Atlantic says that if you cancel you keep your subscription and, where applicable, receive all purchased print products through the end of your then-current term. Print copies are normally sent before the 15th of the cover month.

When exactly do I need to cancel The Atlantic to avoid the next charge?

Before your current term ends. The Atlantic's Terms of Sale state that to avoid charges for a subsequent term, all cancellations must be made before the end of the current one. There is no separate advance-notice window in the US, but do not leave it until renewal day.
