When you download an app and subscribe through the App Store, Apple becomes your billing intermediary. That means Apple — not the individual app company — handles your payment and controls the cancellation process. This is actually good news: it creates one central place where you can cancel any Apple-billed subscription in seconds, without navigating to each service individually.
Here's everything you need to know.
Where to Find and Cancel Apple Subscriptions
On iPhone (iOS 15 and later)
- Open Settings
- Tap your name at the very top (your Apple ID)
- Tap Subscriptions
- You'll see two tabs: Active and All
- Tap any subscription to see its details
- Scroll down and tap Cancel Subscription
- Tap Confirm on the prompt
Done. You'll receive a confirmation email from Apple, and you retain access until the end of your current paid period.
On iPhone (Alternative Path)
If you can't find the Subscriptions menu:
- Open the App Store app
- Tap your profile photo in the top right corner
- Tap your Apple ID name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
This opens the same subscription management screen.
What Each Status Means
While you're here — Gravity tracks every subscription on your iPhone and reminds you before each renewal. Free to download, no bank sync.
★★★★★ Free to download · No credit card required
Active — Currently billing. You can cancel from this view.
Expired — Previously active, now ended. These may have been canceled by you, or may have lapsed due to payment failure.
Free Trial — In a trial period. Billing will begin after the trial ends unless you cancel.
If a subscription shows "Free Trial," cancel it now if you don't want to be charged — you'll still have access for the remaining trial period.
How to Cancel a Specific Apple Subscription
After tapping on an active subscription, you'll see:
- The app name and current plan
- The renewal date and price
- Option to upgrade/downgrade plans
- Cancel Subscription button at the bottom
Tapping Cancel Subscription and confirming is all that's required. The cancellation is immediate and permanent — billing stops at the next renewal date.
What If the Cancel Button Doesn't Appear?
Several situations cause the cancel button to be missing:
Scenario 1: The subscription isn't billed through Apple If you subscribed on a website and paid with a credit card directly, Apple has no record of it. You'll need to cancel directly through the service's own website or app.
Scenario 2: You subscribed on a different Apple ID If you have multiple Apple IDs (work, personal, old email), the subscription may be on a different account. Check by signing out and into each Apple ID.
Scenario 3: Family Sharing — someone else manages it If the subscription was added by the family organizer, only they can cancel it. Or, if you're the organizer, check under Family Sharing for subscriptions belonging to family members.
Scenario 4: The subscription was a gift Gift subscriptions may not show a cancel button until the gift period ends, since there's no ongoing billing to stop.

- Click View Information at the top

Canceling on iPad
The process is identical to iPhone: Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → tap subscription → Cancel Subscription
After Canceling: What Happens
- You receive a confirmation email from Apple (check your Apple ID inbox)
- You retain access until the current billing period ends
- The subscription moves to the Expired or All tab on the Subscriptions screen
- No further charges are made
Apple does not prorate unused days for monthly subscriptions — you get to use the service until the period ends regardless of when you cancel.
Requesting a Refund for an Apple Subscription
If you were charged unintentionally or too recently to have used the service:
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Find the charge
- Select Report a Problem → I didn't mean to subscribe
- Submit the request
Apple typically responds within 48 hours. First-time requests are frequently approved.
The Subscriptions Screen: Your Complete Apple Billing Dashboard
Make a habit of checking Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions every month. It shows you every Apple-billed subscription in one place with exact costs and renewal dates — the fastest way to stay on top of Apple charges.
For subscriptions not billed through Apple, Gravity fills the gap: log every non-Apple subscription in one place, with renewal reminders before each charge. Together, Apple's built-in Subscriptions screen and Gravity give you complete visibility over everything you pay for.
