How to Request an Apple Subscription Refund

To request an Apple subscription refund, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com with your Apple Account, choose "I'd like to," then "Request a refund," pick a reason, select the subscription, and submit. Apple reviews each request individually and often decides within 48 hours; approved refunds can take up to 30 days to reach your payment method.

Refunds and cancellations are two separate steps

Canceling a subscription and getting a refund are not the same action, and doing one does not do the other. Canceling stops future charges but does not return money for a charge that already posted. If you want your money back for a charge you have already been billed, you request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you simply want to stop being billed going forward, you cancel the subscription in Settings on your iPhone or iPad, or in the App Store on a Mac.

Because these are separate, it is worth doing both when a renewal catches you off guard: cancel the subscription so it does not renew again, then submit a refund request for the charge you want reversed. Canceling first does not disqualify you from requesting a refund for the charge you already paid, but a subscription generally stays active until the end of the period you paid for.

How to request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com

The most reliable route works from any web browser. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with the Apple Account (Apple ID) that was used to buy the subscription. Select the "I'd like to" menu and choose "Request a refund." Choose the reason that best matches your situation, then select Next. Pick the subscription or item you want refunded, then select Submit. You can include more than one eligible item in a single request.

On an iPhone or iPad you can reach the same request flow through Settings. Tap your name at the top, then go to Media & Purchases or your Apple Account, and look for your purchase history and the option to report a problem, which links out to the same Apple report-a-problem page. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name in the sidebar, find the purchase, and choose Report a Problem, which also opens reportaproblem.apple.com in a browser.

If the purchase is still shown as pending, you may not be able to request a refund until it finishes processing. Wait until the charge fully posts, then start the request. Some purchases cannot be requested through this page at all; for those, Apple directs you to contact Apple Support directly.

Choosing a reason, submitting, and tracking status

When you select a reason, be honest and specific. Common options cover situations such as not meaning to buy the item, a subscription you did not intend to renew, a purchase you did not authorize, or an app or feature that did not work as expected. Apple uses the reason and the details you provide as part of reviewing the request, so a clear, accurate explanation helps.

After you submit, you can return to reportaproblem.apple.com to check the status of the request. Apple often reaches a decision within about 48 hours, though it can take longer. If the request is approved, the money is returned to the original payment method. Apple notes that it can take up to 30 days for an approved refund to appear on your statement, depending on your bank or card issuer, so a delay in seeing the credit is normal.

Whether your subscription is eligible

Not every purchase qualifies for a refund. Apple reviews each request individually and decides at its discretion, and eligibility can vary by country or region. The governing rules are set out in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions, which is the primary reference for what may or may not be refundable in your location.

Because approval is not assured, treat a refund request as a request rather than a certainty. Requesting promptly after the charge, giving an accurate reason, and requesting for a subscription you have not extensively used all tend to present the clearest case. If a request is denied, that outcome is not necessarily final, and there are further options described below.

If Apple denies your refund request

If your request is declined and you believe the charge is wrong, first contact Apple Support directly. A support representative can review purchases and handle refunds that cannot be processed through the self-service page, and can explain the reason for a denial.

If Apple still will not refund a charge you consider incorrect and you paid with a credit or debit card, you also have rights with your card issuer. Under U.S. federal rules explained by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, you can dispute a billing error with your card company, generally within 60 days after the statement showing the charge was sent. Contact your bank or card issuer, explain the charge you are disputing, and follow their process. Disputing a charge with your bank is a separate path from Apple's own refund review, so use it only when you genuinely believe the charge is an error or was not authorized.

Reducing surprise subscription charges

To limit future surprises, review your active subscriptions periodically. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and you can see and cancel active subscriptions there. On a Mac, you can manage the same list in the App Store under your account, and on the web you can view purchases through your Apple Account.

Canceling at least 24 hours before a renewal date is the most dependable way to avoid the next charge, since subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Keeping your email and purchase notifications on also helps you catch a renewal early, while there is still time to cancel and, if needed, request a refund for the most recent charge.

FAQ

How long does an Apple refund take?

Apple often decides on a refund request within about 48 hours, though it can take longer. If your request is approved, the money is returned to your original payment method, and Apple notes it can take up to 30 days for the credit to appear on your statement, depending on your bank or card issuer.

Can I still get a refund if I already canceled the subscription?

Yes. Canceling only stops future charges; it does not reverse a charge you already paid. To seek money back for a charge that already posted, submit a separate refund request at reportaproblem.apple.com for that specific subscription charge.

What can I do if Apple denies my refund request?

First contact Apple Support directly, since a representative can review the purchase and handle refunds the self-service page cannot. If you paid by credit or debit card and believe the charge is an error or unauthorized, you can also dispute it with your card issuer, generally within 60 days of the statement showing the charge.
