How to cancel Harvard Business Review

Harvard Business Review's help center documents two paths. You can stop auto-renewal yourself at hbr.org under Account Settings, "Your subscription information," via the Manage dropdown. To cancel the subscription outright, HBR directs you to its customer service team by phone or email. Subscriptions bought inside the HBR mobile app must be canceled through Apple or Google.

Menus and labels can change. If the steps below don’t match what you see, use the official help link on this page.

Possible
Keeps access until
Through the expiration or next renewal date shown under Subscription Details in your hbr.org Account Settings. HBR's help center does not document access being cut off at the moment you cancel, and stopping auto-renewal explicitly leaves the current term running.
Contract / fees
HBR magazine subscriptions run as auto-renewing terms. The help center says subscribers should receive a renewal email 60 days before the subscription expires or renews, and that the expiration or next renewal date is visible under Subscription Details in Account Settings. No early-termination fee is documented.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Stop auto-renewal yourself on hbr.org

  1. 1

Sign in to your HBR account at hbr.org using the email address tied to the subscription.

  2. 2

Click your name in the top-right corner and open Account Settings (hbr.org/my-library/settings).

  3. 3

Scroll to the section labeled "Your subscription information".

  4. 4

On the Subscription overview tab, open the "Manage" dropdown and select "Stop Auto-Renewal".

  5. 5

Check the expiration or next renewal date shown under Subscription Details so you know when the term ends. The same Manage dropdown offers "Reactivate auto-renewal" if you change your mind.

Cancel the subscription through HBR Customer Service

  1. 1

Gather your subscription details first - the email address on the account and any order or account number from your confirmation email.

  2. 2

Email your cancellation request with those details. HBR's cancellation article gives customerservice@harvardbusiness.org; its contact article lists customercare@hbr.org as the preferred subscription email.

  3. 3

Or call HBR Customer Service on 800-274-3214 (US and Canada) or +1 (617) 783-7500 (international).

  4. 4

Or open the Harvard Business Publishing Help Center at hbphelp.zendesk.com and click "Help" in the bottom corner to start a chat.

  5. 5

Keep the written confirmation reply, and re-check Account Settings afterwards to confirm the subscription no longer shows a future renewal date.

Cancel an HBR subscription billed by Apple

  1. 1

Confirm you subscribed inside the HBR mobile app rather than on hbr.org - HBR's help center notes magazine subscriptions can be bought in-app through the Apple App Store.

  2. 2

On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name at the top.

  3. 3

Tap Subscriptions, then select the Harvard Business Review entry.

  4. 4

    Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

  5. 5

If the subscription does not appear or will not restore, HBR directs you to Apple's support channels rather than to HBR customer service.

Cancel an HBR subscription billed by Google Play

  1. 1

Confirm the subscription was purchased in-app on Google Play rather than on hbr.org.

  2. 2

Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device and tap your profile icon.

  3. 3

Go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.

  4. 4

Select Harvard Business Review and tap Cancel subscription, then follow the prompts.

  5. 5

If the in-app subscription will not restore in the HBR app, HBR points you to Google's support channels.

Expect a retention offer

  • No self-serve cancel control is documented - the online Manage dropdown only offers Stop Auto-Renewal, while cancellation itself is routed to a phone call, email thread or chat with an agent.
  • Upgrading a subscription tier is a self-serve button on hbr.org, but HBR's own article says downgrading requires contacting HBR Support - the friction runs one way.
  • Two different cancellation email addresses appear across HBR's help articles (customerservice@harvardbusiness.org in the cancellation article, customercare@hbr.org as the preferred contact), which can send requests to the wrong queue.
  • Cancellation requests by email ask you to supply subscription details yourself, so an incomplete first message can add a round trip before anything is processed.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Stopping auto-renewal leaves the subscription active until the expiration date listed in Account Settings; the same Manage dropdown offers "Reactivate auto-renewal" if you reverse the decision.
  • HBR says subscribers should receive a renewal email 60 days before the subscription expires or renews, which is a practical marker for when to act before the next charge.
  • Print issue delivery and subscriber-only access on hbr.org run to the end of the paid term rather than stopping immediately.
  • HBR's help center does not document mid-term refunds or credit for undelivered print issues, so raise that with customer service directly if it applies to you.
  • Anything you bought separately from the HBR Store, such as ebooks, articles or tools, is unaffected - those carry their own access durations independent of a magazine subscription.

Refund notes

  • HBR publishes no refund rule for magazine subscriptions. Its posted return policy covers store orders and states that digital format products such as ebooks, article reprints, curated collections and online courses are not returnable. A separate article says refunds on digital orders typically reach the original payment method within 5-7 business days once processed, but that speaks to refunds already granted, not to eligibility. Any refund for unused subscription time has to be requested from customer service.

FAQ

Is there a Cancel button in my Harvard Business Review account settings?

HBR's own help center does not document one. The Account Settings page at hbr.org/my-library/settings has a "Manage" dropdown under "Your subscription information" whose options are Stop Auto-Renewal and Reactivate auto-renewal. For an outright cancellation, HBR's cancellation article points you to its customer service team by phone or email.

What is the difference between stopping HBR auto-renewal and canceling my Harvard Business Review subscription?

Stopping auto-renewal is the self-serve option on hbr.org and simply prevents the next renewal charge, leaving your current term running to its expiration date. Canceling is the step HBR handles through customer service. If your goal is just to not be billed again, the auto-renewal toggle is the path HBR documents for doing it yourself.

I subscribed to Harvard Business Review inside the HBR mobile app - where do I cancel?

HBR's mobile app article confirms magazine subscriptions can be purchased in-app through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Those are billed by the store, not by HBR, so you cancel in your Apple or Google account subscription settings. HBR explicitly directs you to Apple's or Google's support channels for in-app subscription problems.

How do I reach Harvard Business Review customer service to cancel?

HBR's contact article lists email as preferred at customercare@hbr.org, and its cancellation article gives customerservice@harvardbusiness.org for cancellation requests. Phone is 800-274-3214 for the US and Canada or +1 (617) 783-7500 internationally. Chat is available by opening the Harvard Business Publishing Help Center and clicking Help in the bottom corner.

Will Harvard Business Review refund the unused part of my annual subscription?

HBR does not publish a subscription refund rule. Its posted return policy covers store products and states that digital format items such as ebooks, article reprints and online courses are not returnable. Any refund for unused subscription time is something you would have to raise with HBR customer service directly.
