Start Rescue's policy wording splits the product in two. Of the monthly product it says: "Provided the premium is paid, Continuous Monthly Cover policies continue until cancelled by either us or you", that it may change the premium at any time with 21 days' notice, and that "[p]ayment for your next period of insurance will be taken from your card up to 2 days before the policy is due to expire." Its FAQ repeats that deadline in practical terms: you can cancel a monthly policy online "before the next payment is due", and "payment is taken 2 days before your policy is due to renew". On the annual product, the wording describes Automatic Renewal Protection, says you can opt in or out of it at any time by calling Customer Services or changing the setting online in the Customer Lounge, and says renewal payment including the administration fee is taken from the payment card up to 2 days before the policy expires. Start Rescue also notes that the 14-day cooling-off period applies from when you first took out the policy and does not apply every month, and that on Continuous Monthly Cover you cannot disable Automatic Renewal Protection — you cancel the policy instead.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you have Continuous Monthly Cover

  1. 1

Log in to your online Customer Lounge at startrescue.co.uk/customer-lounge.

  2. 2

Select the policy you no longer want.

  3. 3

Click "Manage Payment Card or Cancel Policy".

  4. 4

    Choose "Cancel Policy" and confirm.

  5. 5

Do it before the next payment is due. Start Rescue says payment is taken 2 days before the policy is due to renew, so build in that gap.

  6. 6

Keep the confirmation and check your card statement across the old renewal date.

  • Start Rescue says that on Continuous Monthly Cover you cannot disable Automatic Renewal Protection — cancelling the policy before the next payment is the mechanism.
  • The same Customer Lounge screen is where the payment card is changed, so make sure you pick "Cancel Policy" and not "Change Payment Card".

If you have Annual Cover and the cooling-off period has passed

  1. 1

Understand the refund position first: Start Rescue says it does not provide refunds after the 14-day cooling-off period or if a claim has been made.

  2. 2

Decide whether you want to end the cover now or simply stop it renewing — with no refund available, stopping the renewal usually leaves you better off.

  3. 3

To cancel outright, contact Customer Services on 01206 655000. Start Rescue says annual cancellations after the cooling-off period must be arranged through that team.

  4. 4

To stop the renewal instead, log in to the Customer Lounge, select the policy, click "Manage Automatic Renewal Settings & Saved Cards" and choose "OPT-OUT OF RENEWAL PROTECTION".

  5. 5

Confirm in writing which of the two you have done, and check no payment is taken two days before the renewal date.

  • Start Rescue's wording says the renewal payment, including the administration fee, is taken from the payment card up to 2 days before the policy is due to expire.
  • It also says that if Automatic Renewal Protection is not enabled you do not need to do anything — the policy simply ends on the date shown in the renewal reminders.

If you are still inside the 14-day cooling-off period

  1. 1

Check the window. Start Rescue's policy wording gives a cooling-off period of 14 days from the time you receive the policy information or your policy start date, whichever is later.

  2. 2

Contact Customer Services on 01206 655000 — Start Rescue's FAQ says to use that team inside the cooling-off period whether you hold an annual or a monthly policy.

  3. 3

Say you are cancelling within the cooling-off period, and confirm you have not made a claim.

  4. 4

On Annual Cover, the wording refunds the premium paid and the arrangement and administration fee, provided no claim has been made. On Continuous Monthly Cover it refunds the premium paid on the same condition.

  5. 5

Ask for the refund figure to be confirmed in writing before you finish.

  • Start Rescue is explicit that the 14-day cooling-off period applies from when you first took out the policy and does not apply every month, so a monthly policy does not get a fresh cooling-off period at each renewal.
  • For Short-Term European Cover the wording says a refund of premium or arrangement and administration fee is not available at all.

If you only want to switch off automatic renewal on an annual policy

  1. 1

Log in to the online Customer Lounge and select the policy you do not want to renew.

  2. 2

Click "Manage Automatic Renewal Settings & Saved Cards".

  3. 3

    Choose "OPT-OUT OF RENEWAL PROTECTION".

  4. 4

Check the setting now shows as disabled — Start Rescue says the setting shows as either Enabled (on) or Disabled (off).

  5. 5

Diarise the expiry date, and check no payment is taken two days before it.

  • Start Rescue says you can turn Automatic Renewal Protection on or off at any time either online in the Customer Lounge or by calling its Customer Services Department.
  • This route does not apply to Continuous Monthly Cover, where the wording says the setting cannot be disabled and you cancel the policy instead.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I cancelled online but a payment still came out.

Check the timing against Start Rescue's collection rule: the renewal payment is taken from your card up to 2 days before the policy is due to renew, so a cancellation on the day before renewal can land after the money has gone. Contact Customer Services on 01206 655000 with the date and time of your cancellation and the confirmation from the Customer Lounge.

There is no cancel option on my policy in the Customer Lounge.

Self-serve cancellation is documented for Continuous Monthly Cover, under "Manage Payment Card or Cancel Policy". An Annual Cover policy shows "Manage Automatic Renewal Settings & Saved Cards" instead, which only turns the renewal off — Start Rescue routes annual cancellations through Customer Services on 01206 655000.

I have sold the vehicle and want my money back.

Start Rescue's FAQ addresses this directly and gives no refund after the cooling-off period. On an Annual policy it says you can either move the cover to another vehicle at the same home address for the rest of the term, or cancel with no refund. On Continuous Monthly Cover it points you to the Customer Lounge to cancel before the next payment is due.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Breakdown assistance stops at the end of the period you have paid for, and no further card payments are taken.
  • On Continuous Monthly Cover, cancelling before the next collection means the following month is simply never charged — there is nothing to refund because nothing extra was taken.
  • On Annual Cover cancelled after the cooling-off period, the premium and the arrangement and administration fee stay with Start Rescue.
  • If you only opted out of Automatic Renewal Protection, the policy stays live to its expiry date and then ends.
  • Check your card statement across the old renewal date, and log back in to the Customer Lounge to confirm the policy no longer shows as renewing.

Refund notes

  • Annual Cover inside the cooling-off period: Start Rescue's wording refunds the premium paid and the arrangement and administration fee, provided no claim has been made.
  • Annual Cover after the cooling-off period: "You may cancel your policy after the 14 day cooling off period but no refund of premium or arrangement and administration fee is available."
  • Continuous Monthly Cover inside the cooling-off period: the wording refunds the premium paid, provided no claim has been made.
  • Continuous Monthly Cover after the cooling-off period: cancellation is allowed but no refund of premium or arrangement and administration fees is provided; you cancel up to 2 days before the start date of the next period of insurance.
  • Short-Term European Cover: the wording says no refund of premium or arrangement and administration fee is available.
  • Where Start Rescue cancels an Annual Cover policy itself, the wording refunds the premium and Arrangement and Administration Fee in full provided no claim has been made within the first 6 months from inception, with no refund where a service has been used or the policy has run more than 6 months. On Continuous Monthly Cover in the same situation it refunds the current month's premium and fee where no claim has been made.

FAQ

How do I cancel my Start Rescue breakdown policy in the UK?

It depends on the policy. Start Rescue's FAQ says that for Continuous Monthly Cover you can cancel after the 14-day cooling-off period by logging in to your online Customer Lounge and cancelling before the next payment is due — the path is "Manage Payment Card or Cancel Policy" then "Cancel Policy". For Annual policies, cancellation after the cooling-off period must be arranged through the Customer Services Department on 01206 655000.

When is it too late to cancel a monthly Start Rescue policy?

Once the renewal payment has been taken, which happens earlier than the renewal date. Start Rescue says payment is taken 2 days before your policy is due to renew, and its policy wording says you can cancel up to 2 days prior to the start date of the next period of insurance. Leave yourself more than two days of margin.

Does Start Rescue refund breakdown cover if I cancel mid-term?

No. Start Rescue's FAQ says it does not provide refunds after the 14-day cooling-off period or if a claim has been made, and its policy wording confirms that after the cooling-off period no refund of premium or arrangement and administration fee is available on either Annual Cover or Continuous Monthly Cover. Short-Term European Cover has no refund at all.

How do I stop Start Rescue automatically renewing my annual cover?

In the Customer Lounge. Start Rescue says to log in, select the policy you don't want to renew, click "Manage Automatic Renewal Settings & Saved Cards" and choose "OPT-OUT OF RENEWAL PROTECTION". You can also turn the setting on or off by calling Customer Services. On Continuous Monthly Cover the setting cannot be disabled — you cancel the policy before the next payment instead.

Do I get a fresh 14-day cooling-off period each month with Start Rescue?

No. Start Rescue states that the 14-day cooling-off period applies from when you first took out the policy and does not apply every month. Inside that original window it refunds the premium paid — and, on Annual Cover, the arrangement and administration fee too — provided no claim has been made, and it asks you to contact Customer Services rather than cancel online.
