How to cancel RAC

Cancel RAC breakdown cover by calling 0330 159 1111; RAC's policy booklet warns that cancelling a direct debit will not always cancel the policy. Cancel inside the 14-day cooling-off period for a refund. After it, a monthly continuous policy stops with no refund, and longer policies lose admin fees plus £85 for each call-out.

It depends which route you use. Switching off automatic renewal leaves the cover running to the policy's expiry date — RAC says "[d]oing this won't end your cover straight away. You'll still be covered – but only up to your policy's expiry date." Cancelling outright ends the policy when RAC processes it, with the refund position set by the booklet's cancellation table.
Contract / fees
RAC's UK Policy Booklet splits policies into monthly continuous ones and everything else. Under the heading "Monthly continuous policies" it says: "[i]f you have a monthly continuous policy, we'll automatically renew it every month until you or we cancel it." For other policies it says that if you have chosen automatic renewal you need do nothing to stay covered, that RAC will collect payment each month or year on your renewal date, and that "[i]f you want to stop your policy from automatically renewing, you can do this at any time – just contact us." It also notes that if your payment-card details have changed, RAC will ask your card provider to update them so the policy can renew. Most policies have two parts to the premium — the breakdown cover itself and an arrangement and administration fee — and your schedule shows whether that fee applies and how much it is. Only the policyholder named on the schedule can cancel, and cancelling cancels the whole policy for everyone named on it.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you want to end the policy (the documented route)

  1. 1

Have your RAC membership number and schedule to hand — only the policyholder shown on the schedule can cancel.

  2. 2

Call RAC on 0330 159 1111. Lines are open weekdays 8am–7pm, Saturday 9:30am–5pm, closed Sunday, and 9am–5pm on bank holidays.

  3. 3

Say you want to cancel the membership. RAC says calling is the easiest way and helps it arrange any refund due sooner.

  4. 4

Ask for the cancellation date and the exact refund or deduction figure before you finish the call.

  5. 5

Do not cancel the direct debit as a shortcut — RAC's booklet says cancelling a direct debit won't always cancel your policy and directs you to contact Customer Services.

  6. 6

Check the next statement to confirm the collection has stopped.

  • RAC publishes no self-serve cancel button for breakdown cover: the FAQ answer routes you to the phone, with a written form only as the accessibility alternative.
  • RAC says that if you cancel your policy for any reason the whole policy is cancelled, so nobody named on it stays covered.

If you cannot use the phone

  1. 1

Open RAC's contact form at racportal.icasework.com/resource?id=IE71000768&db=rac — the link RAC gives for members who are unable to contact it by phone, for example because they are hard of hearing.

  2. 2

Give your membership number, the policyholder's name and address, and state plainly that you want to cancel the policy.

  3. 3

Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation date and of any refund or deduction.

  4. 4

Expect it to be slower. RAC's own note on this route says it may take longer to issue any refunds.

  5. 5

Keep the reference number and check your statement on the next collection date.

  • RAC presents this as the alternative to calling rather than as an equivalent self-serve cancellation.

If you only want to stop an annual continuous policy renewing

  1. 1

Sign in to your myRAC account at rac.co.uk/myrac.

  2. 2

Open account settings — RAC links this directly to rac.co.uk/myrac/account-details.

  3. 3

Turn off the automatic renewal for the policy.

  4. 4

Understand what this does and does not do: RAC says doing this won't end your cover straight away, and that you will still be covered up to your policy's expiry date.

  5. 5

Diarise the expiry date, and check that no payment is taken on or after it.

  • RAC describes this route specifically for an annual continuous policy. Its booklet says a monthly continuous policy renews every month until you or RAC cancel it, so there is no annual renewal to switch off.
  • The booklet's general rule for other policies is the same idea by a different channel: "[i]f you want to stop your policy from automatically renewing, you can do this at any time – just contact us."

If you are still inside the 14-day cooling-off period

  1. 1

Check the window. RAC's cooling-off period starts the moment you buy the policy and ends 14 days after the start date listed in your schedule, or 14 days after you receive your documents if that is later.

  2. 2

Call 0330 159 1111 inside that window and say you are cancelling within the cooling-off period.

  3. 3

Say whether you have used the service, because it changes the figure: on a monthly continuous policy with no call-out RAC gives a full refund and takes no further payments; with a call-out you get no refund but no further payments either.

  4. 4

On a policy of 12 months or longer paid upfront with no call-out, RAC refunds the breakdown part in full and, where an arrangement and administration fee applies, keeps up to £25 of it.

  5. 5

If you have called RAC out, expect £85 to be kept for each call-out — the booklet adds that RAC will never charge you more than the total cost of your cover.

  6. 6

Get the final figure confirmed before you hang up.

  • On a policy of 12 months or longer paid monthly, the equivalent inside the cooling-off period is a refund of what you have paid, with up to £25 of any arrangement and administration fee charged, plus £85 per call-out.
  • If you paid with Tesco Clubcard vouchers, RAC says different cancellation and refund terms apply, and that the voucher value is refunded under the Tesco Clubcard terms instead.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I cancelled the direct debit and now RAC says I owe money.

That is the outcome RAC's booklet warns about — the policy stayed live because a stopped payment is not a cancellation. Call 0330 159 1111, cancel the policy properly, and ask RAC to confirm the end date and what remains payable under the cancellation table for your policy type.

My refund is much smaller than I expected.

Check three things against your schedule: whether an arrangement and administration fee applies and how much of it RAC is entitled to keep (up to £25 inside the cooling-off period, up to £50 after it), how many call-outs you have had at £85 each, and whether you paid an excess, which RAC says it offsets against the call-out deduction. Ask RAC to itemise the calculation.

I am not the person named on the policy but I want to cancel it.

RAC's booklet says the policy can only be cancelled by the policyholder shown on the schedule. The policyholder needs to make the call. RAC does publish a separate bereavement route on its help and support page, with an online notification form and the 0330 159 0740 line, for closing a membership after a death.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Breakdown cover ends when RAC processes the cancellation, and no further payments are taken.
  • Any refund is worked out from the booklet's table, after the arrangement and administration deductions and any £85 call-out charges.
  • If you only switched off automatic renewal, the policy stays live to its expiry date and then stops.
  • Check the next direct debit or card statement to confirm the collection has actually stopped, and keep RAC's confirmation.

Refund notes

  • RAC's UK Policy Booklet says how much you get back depends on the type and length of policy, whether you have made a claim, when you cancel, and whether an arrangement and administration fee applies.
  • Monthly continuous policy, inside the cooling-off period: a full refund and no further payments if you have not used the service; no refund but no further payments if you have.
  • Monthly continuous policy, after the cooling-off period: no refund, but RAC takes no further payments even if you have used the service.
  • 12 months or longer paid upfront, after the cooling-off period: RAC keeps some of any arrangement and administration fee to reflect the time you have been covered, plus up to £50 of what is left, and refunds the breakdown part minus an amount for the time covered. Each call-out costs a further £85.
  • 12 months or longer paid monthly, after the cooling-off period: RAC stops taking monthly payments but charges up to £50 of any remaining arrangement and administration fee, plus £85 per call-out.
  • Where RAC cancels the policy, it says it will refund what you have paid minus an amount for the time you have been covered — except where it cancels because the policy has been misused.

FAQ

How do I cancel my RAC breakdown cover in the UK?

By contacting RAC — there is no self-serve cancel button. RAC's breakdown FAQ says you can cancel at any time and that the easiest way is to call the team on 0330 159 1111, because that helps it arrange any refund due sooner. Lines are open weekdays 8am–7pm, Saturday 9:30am–5pm, closed Sunday, and 9am–5pm on bank holidays. Members who cannot use the phone are pointed to RAC's online contact form instead.

Will cancelling my direct debit cancel my RAC membership?

No. RAC's FAQ states that cancelling a direct debit will not cancel your policy and that you will need to call, and its UK Policy Booklet repeats that cancelling a direct debit won't always cancel your policy and directs you to contact Customer Services. Stopping the payment without cancelling leaves the policy on RAC's records and can leave a balance owing.

Can I turn off RAC automatic renewal without cancelling my cover?

Yes, on an annual continuous policy. RAC says you can do this in your myRAC account under account settings, and is explicit about the effect: doing it won't end your cover straight away, and you will still be covered up to your policy's expiry date. For other policies the booklet says you can stop automatic renewal at any time by contacting RAC.

What refund do I get if I cancel RAC breakdown cover after 14 days?

On a monthly continuous policy, none — but RAC takes no further payments. On a policy of 12 months or longer, RAC refunds the breakdown part minus an amount for the time you have been covered, keeps part of any arrangement and administration fee plus up to £50 of what is left, and deducts £85 for each time you have called it out. The booklet adds that RAC will never charge you more than the total cost of your cover.

How long is RAC's cooling-off period on breakdown cover?

RAC's UK Policy Booklet says the cooling-off period starts the moment you buy the policy and ends 14 days after the start date listed in your schedule, or 14 days after you receive your documents if that is later. Cancel inside it with no call-out and a monthly continuous policy is refunded in full; a policy of 12 months or longer has the breakdown part refunded in full with up to £25 of any arrangement and administration fee kept.
