How to cancel AA

Cancel AA breakdown cover by logging in to your AA account and using the cancel option, or by calling 0343 316 4444. Continuous monthly cover needs a minimum of 30 days' notice and gets no refund; annual cover cancelled after the 14-day cooling-off period is refunded only on death or permanent inability to drive.

On monthly Continuous Cover, the next payment date after your 30 days' notice runs out — the AA's terms say cancellation "will take effect at the next payment date following the end of the notice period". On Annual Cover you keep the cover you have already paid for to the end of the membership year.

Which rules apply depends entirely on how you pay, and the AA sets the two out separately. Its April 2025 UK Personal and Vehicle Breakdown Cover terms and conditions booklet defines "Annual Cover: cover is for 12 months and is paid for in a single sum" and "Continuous Cover: cover is paid for monthly but runs on a continuous basis until cancelled". For Continuous Cover after the cooling-off period the booklet says: "You can cancel your cover at any time by giving a minimum of 30 days' notice. No refunds will be considered and cancellation will take effect at the next payment date following the end of the notice period." For Annual Cover after the cooling-off period it says "No refund will be given unless: 1) You or, where the Membership is Joint or Family, any other nominated person on the Membership, dies; 2) You are permanently unable to drive due to illness or injury", and that any such refund "will be on a pro rated basis". The booklet also states that if you pay for annual cover under a recurring payment authority, for example by direct debit, the cover will automatically renew, and that the AA reserves the right not to renew annual cover or to change your premium.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you want to cancel through your AA account

  1. 1

Open theaa.com/help-support/contact-us-breakdown and scroll to "Cancel breakdown cover".

  2. 2

Choose the "Cancel online" option — the AA describes it as seeing your options or cancelling your cover in your account.

  3. 3

Follow the "Log in to cancel" link and sign in to your AA account.

  4. 4

Work through the cancellation options shown against your policy and confirm.

  5. 5

Save the confirmation and check the next payment date on your statement.

  • The AA lists this alongside a phone route on the same page, so if the account does not show a cancel option for your policy the documented fallback is the customer services line.
  • The AA's terms booklet applies to the account route as well as the phone route: monthly Continuous Cover still needs a minimum of 30 days' notice.

If you pay monthly (Continuous Cover)

  1. 1

Confirm from your membership statement or the AA app that you are on Continuous Cover — cover paid for monthly that, in the AA's words, "runs on a continuous basis until cancelled".

  2. 2

Give notice through your AA account or by calling 0343 316 4444, and state that you are giving the minimum of 30 days' notice the terms require.

  3. 3

Ask the AA to confirm the date the cover ends. The booklet says cancellation "will take effect at the next payment date following the end of the notice period".

  4. 4

Expect the monthly payments to continue during the notice period — the AA's terms say "[n]o refunds will be considered" for Continuous Cover cancelled after the cooling-off period.

  5. 5

Check the statement after that final payment date to be sure nothing else is collected.

  • The AA also documents that downgrading rather than cancelling "will take effect at the next payment date and no part refund for the premium will be considered".
  • The 30 days is notice, not a cancellation fee — but it does mean the money keeps leaving your account during it.

If you pay once a year (Annual Cover) and the cooling-off period has passed

  1. 1

Understand the position before you call: the AA's terms give no refund on Annual Cover cancelled after the cooling-off period except where a member on the policy dies, or is permanently unable to drive due to illness or injury.

  2. 2

Decide whether you actually need to cancel now or simply stop the renewal — since there is no refund, stopping the auto-renewal usually costs you nothing and keeps the cover you have paid for.

  3. 3

To stop the renewal only, complete the AA's opt-out form at theaa.com/help-support/stop-auto-renew, or chat or call.

  4. 4

To cancel outright, log in to your AA account or call 0343 316 4444.

  5. 5

If you are claiming one of the two refund grounds, say so explicitly and ask for the pro-rated calculation in writing.

  • The AA's terms describe those refunds as calculated "on a pro rated basis".
  • Annual Cover also has a suspension route: the terms say you may be entitled to suspend the membership once in each Membership Year for at least 90 days and no more than 5 years if you are living abroad, have cover from another provider, have breakdown services included with a new car purchase, or are temporarily unable to drive due to illness or injury. Suspension is not cancellation and carries no refund for the unused cover.

If you are still inside the 14-day cooling-off period

  1. 1

Check the dates. The AA's cooling-off period "begins from the moment you purchase your policy and continues until 14 days from the start date or the date you receive your documents, whichever is later".

  2. 2

Contact the AA inside that window through your account or on 0343 316 4444 and say you are cancelling within the cooling-off period.

  3. 3

Expect a deduction. On both Annual and Continuous Cover the terms refund the premium paid "minus a £20 adjustment fee payable to AAISL for processing the changes made" where you have not used the service.

  4. 4

If you have already called the AA out, the refund is the premium paid "less the charges for assistance provided" instead.

  5. 5

Get the refund figure confirmed in writing before you close the conversation.

  • The booklet defines the cooling-off period as running from the moment you buy the policy, so it is a one-off window rather than one that reopens — it ends 14 days from the start date or the date you receive your documents, whichever is later.
  • The £20 figure is the AA's own, quoted from its April 2025 terms and conditions booklet.

If you only want to stop the policy renewing automatically

  1. 1

    Go to theaa.com/help-support/stop-auto-renew.

  2. 2

Read the AA's own warning on that page: the form is only for opting out of automatic renewal, not for cancelling the policy itself.

  3. 3

Fill in the form for the policy concerned. The AA says that if you have more than one policy with it you need to complete a separate form for each one.

  4. 4

Expect to still receive a renewal reminder — the AA says it will still send one when it is time to renew.

  5. 5

If what you actually want is to end the cover now, use the cancellation route instead, which the AA routes through chat or a phone call.

  • Opting out means the cover stops at the end of the current term rather than ending immediately, so you keep what you have paid for.
  • The AA's already-with-us page documents the same choice, and says you can opt out any time after purchase using the form, chat, or a call.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I stopped the payment at my bank but the AA says the membership is still running.

Stopping the money is not notice. The AA's terms treat the membership as continuing until you cancel it, and separately say that where a payment fails and it has not been told about a cancellation it will try to re-present the payment. Cancel through your AA account or on 0343 316 4444 so the membership record is closed, and only then deal with the payment instruction.

I opted out of automatic renewal months ago but I am still being charged.

The opt-out form only stops the renewal — it does not end a live policy, and on monthly Continuous Cover there is no renewal date to stop because the cover simply runs until cancelled. If you are being charged monthly, you need the cancellation route and the 30 days' notice, not the opt-out form.

I want to cancel because I am abroad or not driving for a while.

Ask about suspension instead if you are on Annual Cover. The AA's terms allow a suspension once in each Membership Year for at least 90 days and up to 5 years where you are living abroad, covered by another provider, covered through a new car purchase, or temporarily unable to drive through illness or injury. There is no refund for the suspended period, and you have to contact the AA to reactivate.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • On Continuous Cover the membership stays live through the 30 days' notice and then ends at the next payment date after it — you are covered until that point.
  • On Annual Cover you keep the cover you have already paid for; cancelling early normally forfeits the rest rather than refunding it.
  • The recurring payment stops from the effective end date. Check the next statement to confirm nothing collected.
  • If you only used the opt-out form, the policy is still live — it simply will not renew at the end of the term, and the AA says it will still send a renewal invitation.

Refund notes

  • Inside the cooling-off period and with no service used, the AA's terms refund the monthly, quarterly or annual premium paid "minus a £20 adjustment fee payable to AAISL for processing the changes made".
  • Inside the cooling-off period but with the service already used, the refund is the premium paid "less the charges for assistance provided".
  • After the cooling-off period on Continuous Cover the AA's terms say "[n]o refunds will be considered" — the 30 days' notice is the mechanism, not a refund.
  • After the cooling-off period on Annual Cover the AA gives no refund unless a member on the policy dies or is permanently unable to drive due to illness or injury, and any such refund is pro-rated.
  • Where the AA itself cancels a membership, its terms say it will issue "a pro rata refund (calculated on a daily basis) of the premium based on the unexpired cover at cancellation".

FAQ

How do I cancel AA breakdown cover in the UK?

The AA's breakdown contact page gives two routes. Under "Cancel breakdown cover" it offers cancelling online — seeing your options or cancelling your cover in your account behind a log-in — or calling 0343 316 4444, open Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, closed Sunday, and 9am to 5pm on bank holidays. Which rules then apply depends on whether you are on monthly Continuous Cover or Annual Cover.

How much notice does the AA need to cancel monthly breakdown cover?

A minimum of 30 days. The AA's UK terms and conditions booklet says of Continuous Cover: "You can cancel your cover at any time by giving a minimum of 30 days' notice. No refunds will be considered and cancellation will take effect at the next payment date following the end of the notice period." So the monthly payments carry on through the notice period.

Can I get a refund if I cancel AA breakdown cover?

Only in specific cases. Inside the 14-day cooling-off period with no service used, the AA refunds the premium paid minus a £20 adjustment fee payable to AAISL; if you have used the service it deducts the charges for assistance instead. After the cooling-off period, Continuous Cover gets no refund at all, and Annual Cover only gets a pro-rated refund where a member on the policy dies or is permanently unable to drive due to illness or injury.

Does the AA's stop auto-renewal form cancel my breakdown cover?

No, and the AA says so on the form itself: it is only for opting out of automatic renewal, not for cancelling the policy, and it directs you to chat or call if you want to cancel. Opting out leaves your current cover running to the end of its term, and the AA says it will still send a renewal reminder. If you hold more than one policy you need a separate form for each.

When does AA breakdown cover actually end after I cancel?

On Continuous Cover, at the next payment date after your 30 days' notice expires — the AA's terms are explicit that cancellation takes effect then, not on the day you ask. On Annual Cover you keep the cover to the end of the year you have paid for, because after the cooling-off period there is normally no refund for the unused part.
