How to cancel Green Flag

Green Flag has no self-serve cancel button. Its contact page lists cancelling your policy as one of the things its web messaging team handles, or you can call 0345 877 6334. Cancel within 14 days for a full refund; after that you get a refund for the time left if you have not claimed.

The date Green Flag cancels the policy. Because the refund after the cooling-off period is based on how long the policy had left, ending it early ends the cover early rather than running it to the renewal date — so if you only want to stop the next renewal, the separate renewal-preference form is the route that keeps you covered to the end of the year.
Contract / fees
Green Flag's breakdown policy booklet treats the cover as an annual contract even when you pay monthly. It says: "If you've been paying by instalments, your policy still counts as an annual contract. That means if you cancel your policy, but you've made a claim, you'll have to pay all instalment payments that have already fallen due under the credit agreement and remain unpaid, and the total remaining balance under the credit agreement." The booklet adds that your credit agreement has the full details. On renewal, Green Flag's renewals page says that if you are on automatic renewal and happy with your renewal invite there is nothing to do and the policy renews for another 12 months, but that if you want to cancel, change your cover or update your details you must let Green Flag know before your renewal date. Green Flag also explains that the premium has three parts — the insurance premium, insurance premium tax, and the admin and arrangement fee — and says of that fee that it means you will not be charged any fees for cancelling your cover or making changes to your details.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you want to cancel the policy

  1. 1

Open greenflag.com/contact-us and find the "Make a change to your policy" section.

  2. 2

Use the "Message us online if you need to:" option — Green Flag lists "Cancel your policy" there alongside updating your details, upgrading your cover and renewing, and opens its web messaging chat from that block.

  3. 3

Give your policy number and say clearly that you want to cancel, and from what date.

  4. 4

If you would rather speak to someone, Green Flag gives 0345 877 6334 on the same page, open Monday to Friday 8am–7pm, Saturday 9am–5pm and Sunday 10am–5pm.

  5. 5

Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation date and of the refund or fee before you close the conversation.

  • Green Flag publishes no cancel button in a self-service account area for breakdown cover — the documented routes are web messaging and the phone.
  • The policy booklet says the cover is arranged by Green Flag Limited and that anything you need to update it on can be done by contacting Green Flag on the numbers in the booklet or by going online at greenflag.com/contact-us.

If you are still inside the 14-day cooling-off period

  1. 1

Check the window. Green Flag's booklet says that if you have just bought the policy or just renewed and you cancel within 14 days of the policy starting or of you receiving the documents, whichever is later, that is the cooling-off period.

  2. 2

Contact Green Flag through web messaging on the contact page or on 0345 877 6334 inside that window.

  3. 3

Say you are cancelling within the cooling-off period and confirm you have not made a claim — the booklet gives a full refund "as long as you haven't made a claim".

  4. 4

Ask for the refund to be confirmed in writing.

  5. 5

Watch for the money and check the payment has stopped on the next collection date.

  • Green Flag applies the same cooling-off window at renewal, not just when the policy is new.
  • The booklet is explicit that cancelling a direct debit does not cancel your policy on its own.

If the cooling-off period has passed

  1. 1

Check whether you have called Green Flag out since the cover year started, because it decides whether there is anything to refund.

  2. 2

Contact Green Flag through the contact page's web messaging option or on 0345 877 6334 and ask to cancel.

  3. 3

If you have not claimed since that cover year started, Green Flag's booklet gives a refund based on how long your policy had left.

  4. 4

If you have called Green Flag out, expect nothing back — the booklet says you can still cancel but you won't get anything back.

  5. 5

If you pay by instalments and have claimed, ask what the credit agreement leaves owing before you cancel — the booklet says unpaid instalments already fallen due and the total remaining balance become payable.

  6. 6

Get the final figure in writing.

  • Green Flag's own FAQ frames the administration fee by policy number: policies beginning "GF-POL" have paid the admin and arrangement fee upfront so no cancellation fee applies, while policies beginning just "GF" may attract an administration fee for cancelling outside the 14-day cooling-off period.
  • Green Flag's renewals page describes the same fee as covering administering your policy and answering calls, and says it means you will not be charged fees for cancelling your cover or making changes.

If you only want to stop the policy renewing automatically

  1. 1

Go to greenflag.com/contact-us and find "Want to update your renewal preference?".

  2. 2

Use Green Flag's online form at amends.greenflag.com to switch from automatic to manual renewal.

  3. 3

If you bought your cover through a price comparison website, or you have MAYDAY cover, use the separate form Green Flag links for those policies instead.

  4. 4

Do this before your renewal date — Green Flag's renewals page says that if you want to cancel, change your cover or update your details you must let it know before then.

  5. 5

Diarise the renewal date and check no payment is taken on or after it.

  • This route keeps the cover you have already paid for and simply stops the next 12-month term starting, which is usually better value than cancelling mid-year.
  • Green Flag's renewals page says that on automatic renewal, a policy you are happy with renews for another 12 months with nothing for you to do.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I cannot find a cancel option in my Green Flag account or app.

There is not one to find. Green Flag documents cancellation through the web messaging team on greenflag.com/contact-us or by calling 0345 877 6334. The only self-serve online forms it publishes for policy changes are for updating your vehicle, updating your telephone number, and switching your renewal preference.

I want to cancel but I have already called Green Flag out this year.

You can still cancel — the booklet says so — but outside the cooling-off period a claim in that cover year means there is nothing to refund. If you pay by instalments, ask what the credit agreement leaves owing first, because the booklet makes the unpaid instalments and remaining balance payable in that situation.

I only wanted to stop the renewal but the policy was cancelled straight away.

Those are two separate Green Flag routes and they have different effects. The renewal-preference form at amends.greenflag.com switches you from automatic to manual renewal and leaves the current year's cover intact; asking the web messaging team or the phone team to cancel ends the policy. Say which one you want explicitly.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • The breakdown cover ends on the cancellation date Green Flag confirms — this is not a notice period that runs to your renewal date.
  • Any refund is worked out on how much of the policy year was left, and only if you have not claimed in that cover year.
  • If you pay by instalments and have claimed, the credit agreement balance can still be payable after the policy ends.
  • If you only changed your renewal preference, the policy stays live to its renewal date and then does not renew.
  • Check your next bank or card statement to confirm the payment has stopped.

Refund notes

  • Inside the cooling-off period — 14 days from the policy starting or from you receiving the documents, whichever is later — Green Flag's booklet gives a full refund as long as you have not made a claim.
  • After the cooling-off period, and provided you have not claimed since that cover year started, the booklet gives a refund based on how long your policy had left.
  • Outside the cooling-off period with a call-out already used, the booklet says you can still cancel but you won't get anything back.
  • Green Flag's FAQ adds that you may have to pay an administration fee to cancel unless your policy number begins with GF-POL.
  • Where Green Flag cancels the policy, its booklet says it will give at least 7 days' notice and give back what you paid apart from an amount for the time the policy lasted, with no premium refunded if you have made a claim on a lump-sum policy.

FAQ

How do I cancel my Green Flag breakdown cover in the UK?

Green Flag routes it through people rather than a button. Its contact page lists "Cancel your policy" under "Message us online if you need to:", handled by its web messaging team, alongside updating your details, upgrading your cover and renewing. If you would rather call, the same page gives 0345 877 6334, open Monday to Friday 8am–7pm, Saturday 9am–5pm and Sunday 10am–5pm.

Does Green Flag charge a cancellation fee?

It depends on your policy number. Green Flag's FAQ says that if your policy number begins with GF-POL you have paid an admin and arrangement fee upfront so you won't need to pay a fee for cancellation, and that if it begins with just GF you may have to pay an administration fee if you cancel outside the 14-day cooling-off period. Its renewals page describes the same fee as the reason you are not charged for cancelling or making changes.

Will I get a refund if I cancel Green Flag breakdown cover?

Within the first 14 days, Green Flag's FAQ says you can cancel and receive a full refund. Outside that cooling-off period you get a refund for the remaining time left on your policy if you have not called Green Flag out; if you have made a claim in that cover year, the booklet says you can still cancel but you won't get anything back.

Can I stop Green Flag automatically renewing without cancelling?

Yes. Green Flag's contact page has a "Want to update your renewal preference?" section with an online form at amends.greenflag.com to switch from automatic to manual renewal, and a separate form for cover bought through a price comparison website or for MAYDAY policies. Its renewals page says you need to let Green Flag know before your renewal date, and this route keeps the cover you have already paid for.

I pay Green Flag monthly — can I just stop the payments?

No. Green Flag's booklet says cancelling a direct debit won't automatically cancel your policy, and that a policy paid by instalments still counts as an annual contract. If you cancel after having made a claim, it says you will have to pay any instalments already fallen due and unpaid plus the total remaining balance under the credit agreement, with the full details in that agreement.
