How to cancel Slack

Slack cancellation is self-serve on the web: a Workspace Owner (or the member who upgraded) opens Admin, then Manage billing, then Change plan details, and picks Downgrade to Free, effective immediately or at the next renewal. Paid features end on that date. Unused time comes back as expiring Slack credits rather than cash, and history shrinks to 90 days.

Paid features run until the effective date you pick during the downgrade — either immediately or the next renewal date. After that the workspace stays open on Slack's free plan.
Contract / fees
Self-serve plans can be billed monthly or annually; Slack's help center states that if you cancel after a trial has ended, "you can cancel at any time and no further payments will be taken, but we will not refund payments already made," so an annual term is effectively paid through to its renewal date. No notice period is documented. Slack does not document a self-serve cancellation path for Enterprise+, which its help center routes to the Sales team; organizations on Enterprise Grid / Enterprise+ should check their own agreement. Only Workspace Owners and members who upgraded the workspace can change or cancel the plan.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Downgrade to Free (cancel a paid Slack plan)

  1. 1

From your desktop, click Admin in the sidebar. If you don't see that option, click your workspace name to open workspace settings instead.

  2. 2

Select Manage billing from the menu. The Billing page can also be reached directly at my.slack.com/admin/billing.

  3. 3

From the Overview tab, select Change plan details.

  4. 4

Select Downgrade to Free, then choose whether the plan change takes effect immediately or on your next renewal date.

  5. 5

    Click Continue to Checkout.

  6. 6

Review the downgrade details, then click Downgrade Slack.

Step down from Business+ to Pro instead of canceling outright

  1. 1

From your desktop, click Admin in the sidebar (or your workspace name to open workspace settings).

  2. 2

    Select Manage billing.

  3. 3

From the Overview tab, select Change plan details.

  4. 4

Select Downgrade to Pro, then choose the billing cycle and when the change should take effect.

  5. 5

    Click Start Downgrade.

  6. 6

Review the details and click Continue.

  7. 7

Confirm the payment method, then click Confirm Billing and Downgrade.

End a paid-plan trial before it converts

  1. 1

Open the workspace Billing page (click Admin in the sidebar, then Manage billing).

  2. 2

Workspace Owners and Admins can end a trial at any time from there; otherwise the trial cancels on its end date and the workspace reverts to the free plan.

  3. 3

Slack states no credit card is needed to start a trial and that you are not charged unless you choose to upgrade — if you did upgrade during the trial, the charge lands at the end of the trial period.

Expect a retention offer

  • A review-and-confirm interstitial before the downgrade completes (Continue to Checkout, then Review the downgrade details, then Downgrade Slack)
  • Documented warnings that downgrading costs you paid features and applies message, file and app limits, plus advice to check Workspace analytics first to see what will be hidden or deleted
  • Unused time is returned as Slack credits that are applied to a future upgrade rather than paid out, and those credits expire when the paid plan terminates
  • Only Workspace Owners and the member who upgraded can reach the Manage billing option, so anyone else has to escalate to cancel
  • No documented mobile-app cancellation path — the plan change lives on the desktop/browser Billing page

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • The workspace is not deleted — it continues on Slack's free plan, and paid features stop on the effective date you selected.
  • Free workspaces are limited to the most recent 90 days of message and file history, so older messages and files become hidden.
  • Slack states that data in a free workspace more than one year old is deleted (deletions began August 26, 2024).
  • Third-party and custom app installs are capped at 10; Workflow Builder workflows stop running; canvases and lists become read-only; guest accounts are deactivated and custom user groups are removed.
  • Any unused portion of the paid period is credited as Slack credits — non-transferable, non-refundable, and expiring when the paid plan terminates — rather than refunded to your card.
  • Slack recommends reviewing Workspace analytics before downgrading to see which messages and files will be hidden or deleted.

Refund notes

  • Slack does not issue cash refunds for the remainder of a term. Its help center states that after a trial ends, "you can cancel at any time and no further payments will be taken, but we will not refund payments already made." Unused paid time is returned as Slack credits, which Slack describes as having "no currency or exchange value," being non-transferable and non-refundable, and expiring when the paid plan terminates.

FAQ

Who is allowed to cancel a paid Slack plan?

Slack's help center states that Workspace Owners and members who upgraded the workspace can manage the plan from the Billing page. Regular members and even some admins will not see the Manage billing option, so the downgrade has to be done by (or handed off to) one of those people.

Does canceling Slack delete my workspace and its messages?

No. The workspace continues on Slack's Free plan rather than being deleted. Slack documents that free workspaces are limited to the most recent 90 days of message and file history, and that data more than one year old is deleted from free workspaces, so older content becomes hidden or removed.

Will Slack refund the unused part of my annual or monthly term?

Slack issues credits rather than cash. Its documentation says unused portions are credited to the workspace account, and that credits "have no currency or exchange value, are non-transferable and non-refundable, and will expire following the termination of your paid Slack plan." Slack's stated terms are that payments already made are not refunded.

Can I downgrade a Slack plan from the iPhone or Android app?

Slack's documented steps for changing or canceling a plan run through the Billing page on desktop or browser (Admin, then Manage billing, at my.slack.com/admin/billing). No mobile in-app path is documented, so plan on using a computer.

What happens if I do nothing at the end of a Slack paid-plan trial?

Slack states that trials cancel on the trial end date and the workspace reverts to the free plan if you choose not to upgrade, and that no card is required to start a trial. Workspace Owners and Admins can also end a trial early from the Billing page.
