How to cancel RuneScape Membership

RuneScape membership is a recurring subscription you can end yourself. Sign in at account.runescape.com/subscriptions, open the Subscriptions tab, then choose Manage on the character. Membership runs to the current term's expiry date before the account reverts to free-to-play. Cancel more than 72 hours ahead — Jagex may take renewal payment before then. Apple, Google, Steam and Boku subscribers cancel through those providers.

No minimum term, lock-in or written-notice requirement is documented — subscriptions can be cancelled at any time from the Subscriptions tab. Payments are taken in advance at the relevant interval until you cancel, and renewal payment can be collected up to 72 hours before the current term expires, so cancelling inside that 72-hour window may still result in a charge. The cancellation mechanics, cooling-off wording and expiry-date behaviour live in Jagex's Subscription Terms & Conditions, not in the Managing Subscriptions support article. Where required by law, Jagex sends renewal reminders: for monthly subscriptions, a reminder at least 7 days before renewal once every 6 months (not before every monthly renewal); for longer subscriptions, two reminders, at least 30 days and at least 7 days before renewal. Membership obtained by redeeming a Bond is a redemption for membership across both game versions rather than a recurring agreement managed in the Subscriptions tab.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Cancel directly in Jagex Account Management

  1. 1

Go to account.runescape.com/subscriptions and log in to your Jagex Account (this is the exact 'Jagex Account Management' link Jagex uses in the cancellation section).

  2. 2

Select the 'Subscriptions' tab to see a list of your active and expired subscriptions.

  3. 3

Select 'Manage' on the specific character whose membership you want to cancel.

  4. 4

Follow the prompts to cancel the recurring subscription.

  5. 5

Per Jagex's Subscription Terms & Conditions, cancelling outside a relevant cooling-off period keeps your subscription benefits until the expiry date of the current subscription term; once it expires with no further payment the account reverts to a free-to-play account.

Cancel on a legacy RuneScape username (no Jagex Account)

  1. 1

Go to payments.jagex.com/manage/subscriptions to reach Account Settings.

  2. 2

Select 'Log in with RuneScape username' at the bottom of the page.

  3. 3

Enter either your login username or your email address.

  4. 4

Open your subscription and follow the prompts to cancel the recurring payment.

Cancel an Apple-billed RuneScape subscription

  1. 1

Jagex routes App Store subscribers to Apple — cancelling on the Jagex site will not stop an Apple charge.

  2. 2

On iPhone or iPad open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions.

  3. 3

Select the RuneScape subscription and choose Cancel Subscription.

  4. 4

Confirm, then check the subscription shows as cancelled or expiring.

Cancel a Google Play-billed RuneScape subscription

  1. 1

Jagex routes Google Play subscribers to Google to cancel.

  2. 2

Open the Google Play Store app or go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, signed in to the Google account that pays.

  3. 3

    Select the RuneScape subscription.

  4. 4

    Choose Cancel subscription and confirm.

Cancel a Steam-billed RuneScape subscription

  1. 1

Jagex directs Steam subscribers to manage the subscription via Steam rather than through Jagex.

  2. 2

Open the Steam client or Steam website and go to your Account Details page.

  3. 3

Find the RuneScape subscription under your active subscriptions.

  4. 4

Follow Steam's prompts to cancel the recurring charge.

Cancel a Boku carrier / SMS-billed subscription

  1. 1

Find the text message that confirmed your RuneScape purchase.

  2. 2

Reply STOP or CANCEL to that message, as Jagex documents under 'If you purchased through Boku'.

  3. 3

Note that Jagex's Refunds article states purchases via SMS are non-refundable and directs you to contact Boku about them.

BoaCompra/PagSeguro, no access to your character, or a refund request

  1. 1

If you subscribed via BoaCompra/PagSeguro, Jagex links you to international.pagseguro.com to manage the subscription there.

  2. 2

If you cannot access your character, Jagex's 'If you don't have access to your character' section links to PayPal's automatic-payments help page to cancel the recurring payment from inside PayPal.

  3. 3

Jagex also points to its 'Can't log in?' support article for regaining access to the account.

  4. 4

If you still cannot cancel, use the 'Talk to us' button at the bottom of the support article to raise a ticket with Jagex Player Support.

  5. 5

For a refund, use the 'Talk to us' button on Jagex's Refunds article — Jagex reviews requests for purchases made directly via Jagex within the last 6 months, case-by-case and at its sole discretion, and only where no part of the purchase has been used.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Membership benefits continue until the expiry date of the current subscription term — cancelling does not cut access off on the spot (Jagex Subscription Terms & Conditions).
  • Once that term expires with no further payment, the account reverts to a free-to-play account and loses membership benefits (full map, members' quests, skills and future content).
  • The account is not closed by cancelling — it reverts to free-to-play rather than being removed.
  • Cancelling less than 72 hours before expiry may still result in a renewal charge, which may require contacting Jagex to request a refund.
  • Membership time added by redeeming a Bond is handled through the in-game Bond redemption flow, not the Subscriptions tab.

Refund notes

  • Refunds are not self-serve. Jagex's Refunds article says it will review refund requests for purchases made directly via Jagex within the last 6 months, assessed case-by-case and at Jagex's sole discretion, and only where no part of the purchase has been used — requests go through the "Talk to us" button on that article. In certain territories a 14-day cooling-off right to request a refund applies. If you cancel less than 72 hours before expiry you may still be charged and may need to contact Jagex about a refund. Apple, Google Play and Steam purchases must be refunded through those platforms; SMS/Boku purchases are documented as non-refundable, with Jagex directing you to contact Boku.

FAQ

Does cancelling RuneScape membership end my access immediately?

No. Jagex's Subscription Terms & Conditions state that if you cancel outside a relevant cooling-off period you keep your subscription benefits until the expiry date of the current subscription term. Once that term ends with no further payment, the account reverts to a free-to-play account.

I subscribed to RuneScape through Steam or the mobile app — can I cancel it on the Jagex site?

No. Jagex's Managing Subscriptions article sorts cancellation by payment source and sends third-party subscribers back to whoever they signed up with — Steam, Google Play or Apple. Cancelling there is what stops the recurring charge. The Jagex Subscriptions tab only manages subscriptions taken out directly with Jagex.

Where does PayPal come into cancelling RuneScape membership?

PayPal is not a separate billing tier in Jagex's cancellation list. It appears under the article's 'If you don't have access to your character' section, where Jagex links to PayPal's automatic-payments help so you can stop the recurring payment from inside PayPal when you cannot get into the account. If you can log in, cancel in the Subscriptions tab instead.

Will cancelling my RuneScape membership delete my character or account?

No. The account reverts to a free-to-play account rather than being removed. You lose members-only content such as the full map, members' quests, skills and future content, but cancelling does not close the account itself.

RuneScape charged me right before I cancelled — can I get that back?

Renewal payment can be taken up to 72 hours before the current term expires, so cancelling inside that window may still result in a charge and may require contacting Jagex. Refunds on purchases made directly via Jagex in the last 6 months are reviewed case-by-case at Jagex's sole discretion, via the 'Talk to us' button on its Refunds article.
