How to cancel National Trust

National Trust membership is cancelled by phoning 0344 800 1895 or emailing enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk with your full name, address and supporter number. There is no online cancel button and no refund — memberships count as charitable donations. Monthly Direct Debit payers continue to the end of the membership year, then decline the renewal.

Where to start
The National Trust Supporter Service Centre — a call to 0344 800 1895, or an email to enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk including your full name, address and supporter number. My Account handles changes such as magazine preferences and replacement cards, but the Trust's FAQ routes cancellation to phone or email.

Keeps access until
The end of your membership year. The Trust's FAQ says that if you pay by monthly Direct Debit you "need to continue to pay until the end of your membership year as per your monthly agreement", and recommends using the benefits until your renewal date, at which point you can decide not to renew.
Contract / fees
Membership is an annual commitment, even when the money leaves monthly. The National Trust's Direct Debit page states: "Upon taking out a selected membership by Monthly Direct Debit, you are agreeing to National Trust membership for one year, payable in instalments due on a monthly basis as your annual membership progresses." Its monthly Direct Debit payment terms repeat that "[y]ou agree to take out the selected National Trust membership for one year", with instalment amounts and dates set out in a payment schedule sent with the welcome or renewal letter. Renewal is automatic: the Trust says "[y]our membership will automatically renew after a year if you pay by annual or monthly Direct Debit", that it will write to you before the end of the membership year with new cards and a new Direct Debit schedule, and that you "will be given the opportunity to tell us if you do not want to renew your membership for the following year". If you fall behind, the Trust says membership may be closed, and that it will write offering you the chance to pay the remaining instalments by other means or set up a new Direct Debit.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you pay by monthly Direct Debit

  1. 1

Check where you are in the membership year — the Trust says the instalments run to the end of it under your monthly agreement.

  2. 2

Call 0344 800 1895 or email enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk with your full name, address and supporter number.

  3. 3

State that you do not want the membership to renew, and ask for the date the membership year ends.

  4. 4

Expect no refund: the Trust says memberships are classified by HMRC as a charitable donation and it is unable to refund any part of the donation.

  5. 5

Leave the Direct Debit in place until the Trust confirms the final instalment has been taken.

  • The Trust's own advice is to keep using the benefits until the renewal date rather than walking away mid-year, because the money is not refunded either way.
  • Direct Debit payers are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee, explained at /guides/direct-debit-guarantee-explained.

If you pay annually by Direct Debit or card

  1. 1

Note your renewal date — the Trust says annual Direct Debit memberships renew automatically after a year.

  2. 2

Contact the Supporter Service Centre on 0344 800 1895 or at enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk before that date.

  3. 3

Tell the Trust you do not want to renew for the following year. Its Direct Debit page says you will be given that opportunity when it writes to you before the end of the membership year.

  4. 4

    Ask for confirmation in writing.

  5. 5

Cancel the Direct Debit with your bank only after the final payment has been taken and the renewal has been stopped.

  • The Trust says it writes before the end of the membership year with new cards and a new Direct Debit schedule, so the renewal letter is your prompt to act.

If you want to stop the automatic renewal rather than end it now

  1. 1

Watch for the renewal letter, which the Trust sends before the end of your membership year.

  2. 2

Respond to it — the Trust states you will be given the opportunity to tell it if you do not want to renew for the following year.

  3. 3

If you would rather not wait for the letter, call 0344 800 1895 or email enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk to record the decision in advance.

  4. 4

Keep visiting until the end date; the membership you have paid for runs to the end of the membership year either way.

  • This is the route that costs nothing extra. Ending the membership mid-year does not reduce what you pay and does not produce a refund.

Expect a retention offer

  • The Trust's cancellation answer steers you towards staying to the end of the year before it gives you the contact details: it says monthly Direct Debit payers need to keep paying to the end of the membership year, and that it would "therefore recommend continuing to take advantage of the benefits until your renewal date, at which point you can decide to not renew".

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I cancelled but the monthly payments are still coming out.

That is the documented behaviour. The Trust says monthly Direct Debit payers continue to pay to the end of the membership year under the monthly agreement, so the instalments run on after you give notice. Ask the Supporter Service Centre on 0344 800 1895 to confirm the date of your final instalment, then check that nothing is collected after it.

I cannot find a way to cancel in My Account.

There isn't one. The Trust's FAQ describes My Account as the portal for things like magazine and handbook preferences, replacement cards and how you hear from the Trust, and routes cancellation to a call on 0344 800 1895 or an email to enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk with your full name, address and supporter number.

I want to leave but I don't want to lose the rest of the year I've paid for.

You do not have to. Because nothing is refunded, the Trust's own advice is to keep using the membership until the renewal date and then decline the renewal. Contact the Supporter Service Centre and ask specifically for the membership not to renew, rather than for it to be closed today.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Your membership runs to the end of the membership year you have paid for — free entry and parking continue until then.
  • The Trust stops the automatic renewal, so no new cards or Direct Debit schedule are issued for the following year.
  • Monthly instalments continue until the membership year ends; after that the collections stop.
  • No money is refunded, whichever way you paid.
  • Once the Trust confirms the final payment has been taken, cancel the Direct Debit with your bank as a backstop and check the next statement.

Refund notes

  • No part of a National Trust membership is refunded. Its FAQ states that memberships are classified by HMRC as a charitable donation and are non-refundable, and that this covers card, cash and Direct Debit payments.
  • Because there is no refund, timing matters more than speed: the Trust's own recommendation is to keep using the membership until your renewal date and then decline the renewal.
  • Monthly Direct Debit instalments remain due to the end of the membership year even after you tell the Trust you are leaving.

FAQ

How do I cancel my National Trust membership?

By phone or email. The National Trust's membership FAQ gives two routes: call 0344 800 1895, or email enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk including your full name, address and supporter number. There is no self-serve cancel button — My Account handles things like magazine preferences and replacement cards rather than ending the membership.

Will the National Trust refund my membership if I cancel?

No. Its FAQ says memberships "are classified by HMRC as a charitable donation and, as such, are non-refundable", and that you are welcome to cancel at any time but the Trust is "unable to refund any part of your donation". It states this applies to card, cash and Direct Debit payments.

Do National Trust monthly Direct Debit payments stop when I cancel?

Not immediately. The Trust says that if you have chosen the monthly Direct Debit option you "need to continue to pay until the end of your membership year as per your monthly agreement". Its own recommendation is to keep taking advantage of the benefits until your renewal date and then decide not to renew, since the money is not refunded either way.

Does National Trust membership renew automatically?

Yes, if you pay by Direct Debit. The Trust's Direct Debit page says your membership "will automatically renew after a year if you pay by annual or monthly Direct Debit", that it writes to you before the end of the membership year with new cards and a new Direct Debit schedule, and that you will be given the opportunity to say you do not want to renew for the following year.

What happens if I just cancel the National Trust Direct Debit at my bank?

The Trust treats that as a missed instalment rather than a cancellation. Its monthly Direct Debit terms say that if you fail to pay any instalment by the required date your membership may be closed, and that it will write giving you the opportunity to pay the remaining instalments for the membership year by other means or to set up a new Direct Debit. Tell the Supporter Service Centre first so the membership record is closed properly.
