How to cancel iCloud+

iCloud+ is billed by Apple, so you cancel it in your Apple Account subscriptions: on iPhone or iPad open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap iCloud+, then Cancel Subscription. On Mac use System Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Manage Plan, or use account.apple.com in a browser. On iOS 18.3 and earlier, choose Downgrade Options and pick the 5 GB plan. Access continues until your billing period ends.

Menus and labels can change. If the steps below don’t match what you see, use the official help link on this page.

iPhone or iPad (iOS/iPadOS 18.4 or later)

  1. 1

Before you start, download or remove any content that exceeds the storage amount you are moving to.

  2. 2

Open the Settings app, then tap your name at the top.

  3. 3

Tap Subscriptions, then tap iCloud+ under Active.

  4. 4

Tap Cancel Subscription. Apple shows a message saying you may not have enough iCloud storage to sync all your data.

  5. 5

Confirm the cancellation. To move to a smaller paid tier instead of cancelling, tap See All Plans, select a plan and follow the onscreen instructions.

iPhone or iPad (iOS/iPadOS 18.3 or earlier)

Windows PC (iCloud for Windows)

Open the Subscriptions section of your account settings.

    Select the iCloud+ subscription.

  4. 4

Follow the onscreen instructions to cancel. If there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled.

No Apple device available (request via reportaproblem)

  2. 2

Tap or click "I'd like to," then choose "Request a refund."

  5. 5

Wait for Apple's decision — Apple says refund decisions can take 24 to 48 hours.

Expect a retention offer

  • No discount or save offers are documented; before you confirm, Apple shows a warning that you may not have enough iCloud storage to sync all your data.
  • On iOS/iPadOS 18.3 and earlier, macOS Sonoma to Sequoia and iCloud for Windows, ending iCloud+ is framed as a storage 'downgrade' behind a Downgrade Options screen rather than a labelled Cancel button.
  • Those older flows also prompt you to re-enter your Apple Account password before the change is applied.
  • If you also pay for Apple One, Apple notes there might be additional steps after you select Change Storage Plan before you can downgrade or cancel your storage.
  • The exact menu path differs by OS version, so instructions you find may not match what is on your device.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • The change takes effect after your current subscription billing period ends — you keep the paid storage and iCloud+ features until then.
  • Your account moves to the free 5 GB iCloud plan unless you selected a smaller paid tier.
  • You lose iCloud+ features including Hide My Email, iCloud Private Relay, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video support.
  • If your stored data exceeds the new capacity, iCloud won't sync or update your information and iCloud backups won't complete.
  • Syncing and backups resume once you increase your storage capacity or delete enough information to make space.
  • Apple recommends downloading or removing content that exceeds the new storage amount before the downgrade takes effect so nothing is lost.

Refund notes

  • Apple's iCloud+ page states that partial refunds are available where required by law, and that if you recently changed your iCloud+ plan you should contact Apple within 14 days for a refund. Refund requests are made at reportaproblem.apple.com, and Apple says decisions can take 24 to 48 hours. Refund eligibility varies by country or region.

FAQ

When does an iCloud+ cancellation actually take effect?

Apple states that if you downgrade or cancel your iCloud+ plan, the change takes effect after your current subscription billing period ends. Until then you keep your paid storage and iCloud+ features, then the account moves to the 5 GB iCloud plan.

Will canceling iCloud+ delete my photos and files?

Apple's page says that if your iCloud storage exceeds your new plan capacity, iCloud won't sync or update your information and iCloud backups won't complete; syncing and backups resume once you increase storage or delete data. Apple advises downloading or removing content that exceeds your new storage amount before you downgrade.

Which iCloud+ features do I lose if I move to the 5 GB plan?

Apple lists Hide My Email, iCloud Private Relay, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video support as iCloud+ features you no longer have access to on the free iCloud plan. Apple also notes not all features are available in all countries or regions.

Can I cancel iCloud+ if I no longer have an Apple device?

Yes. Apple documents signing in at reportaproblem.apple.com with your Apple Account, choosing "I'd like to" then "Request a refund", picking a reason, and selecting the most recent iCloud+ or iCloud charge before submitting. Apple says refund decisions can take 24 to 48 hours. You can also open the Subscriptions section at account.apple.com in any browser.

I pay for Apple One and a separate iCloud+ plan — can I drop just the iCloud+ plan?

Apple says that if you pay for both Apple One and an iCloud+ plan, you can downgrade or cancel the iCloud+ plan and use the iCloud+ storage included in Apple One. Apple warns that after you select Change Storage Plan there might be additional steps before you can downgrade or cancel your storage.
