How to cancel Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV cancels on the web, not in-game. Log into the Mog Station with your Square Enix account, open Service Account Status, and choose Cancel Subscription — that option only appears when a recurring subscription is active. You keep playing through the game time already paid for. Extra paid retainers bill separately and must be released on their own.

Menus and labels can change. If the steps below don’t match what you see, use the official help link on this page.

Contract / fees
No minimum term, lock-in period or early-termination fee is documented for the Final Fantasy XIV subscription. There are two parallel models: a recurring subscription (credit card, Crysta or Steam auto-renewal) that keeps billing until cancelled, and prepaid Game Time Cards that do not renew — card time simply runs out. Square Enix's Game Time Card FAQ documents that cards are sold only in 60-day increments, are region-specific, and that multiple cards can be redeemed provided you do not exceed the 360-day subscription limit. The Lodestone Retainer Service guide separately states that game time cards cannot be used to pay for the Retainer Service.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Cancel the recurring subscription in Mog Station

  1. 1

Log into the Mog Station at mogstation.com using the Square Enix account you use to play Final Fantasy XIV.

  2. 2

Open the "Service Account Status" page from the menu.

  3. 3

Select "Cancel Subscription" — Square Enix documents that this option is only displayed when a recurring payment option is active on the account.

  4. 4

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. You keep playing for the remainder of the time already paid for.

Release extra paid retainers (a separate charge)

  1. 1

Open the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Mog Station — the Retainer Service play guide directs all retainer changes there rather than into the game, and the Retainer Service is billed separately from the game subscription.

  2. 2

Find the Retainer Service entry for your service account and reduce the number of additional retainers you are paying for. (Square Enix's play guide does not publish the Mog Station menu path, so follow the on-screen navigation.)

  3. 3

If you pay by credit card, Crysta or Steam auto-renewal, you can release an additional retainer during the period, but the change only takes effect at the next billing cycle — the guide states there are no refunds for releasing a retainer prior to the end of a billing cycle.

  4. 4

If you pay by Game Time Card or Steam Wallet, the guide states it is not possible to release an additional retainer during an active subscription period; renewal is manual and the change happens at renewal. Note that game time cards cannot be used to pay for the Retainer Service at all.

  5. 5

Retainers that become inaccessible do not lose their items or gil — the guide answers "No, they will not" on whether they are lost — but you must resubscribe to the service to access them again.

Prepaid Game Time Card — nothing to cancel

  1. 1

Open "Service Account Status" in the Mog Station. If no "Cancel Subscription" option is shown, there is no active recurring subscription on the account — Square Enix documents that the option is only present when a recurring subscription is active.

  2. 2

Game Time Card days are prepaid, so there is no recurring billing to stop; the time simply runs out and no further charge is made.

  3. 3

Square Enix's Game Time Card FAQ documents that cards are sold only in 60-day increments and are region-specific. It does not document any way to cancel or refund a card once its value has been redeemed.

  4. 4

Separately, the Lodestone Retainer Service guide states that game time cards cannot be used to pay for the Retainer Service.

  5. 5

The FAQ states you can redeem multiple Game Time Cards provided you do not exceed the 360-day subscription limit, so do not redeem more cards than you intend to use.

Close the service account itself (different from stopping billing)

  1. 1

On the same "Service Account Status" page in the Mog Station, select the "Cancel Service Account" button from the bottom of the screen. (Square Enix documents this button and the "Cancel Subscription" option in two separate help articles.)

  2. 2

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the cancellation procedure — this cancels the service account rather than only stopping the recurring payment.

  3. 3

Square Enix documents that this is reversible: return to "Service Account Status" and select the "Reactivate Service Account" button.

  4. 4

If you only want the charges to stop, use "Cancel Subscription" instead and leave the service account in place.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Recurring billing stops, but access does not end that day — Square Enix documents that you can still play for the remainder of the time already paid for.
  • Once the paid time expires the account is no longer subscribed, and you check its state on the Service Account Status page.
  • No refund is issued for time left in the current cycle; the Support Center's documentation says it cannot offer refunds on subscriptions.
  • Reactivation is available later from the same Service Account Status page, via the "Reactivate Service Account" button.
  • Extra paid retainers are not covered by the subscription cancellation — they are released separately in the Retainer Service section of the Mog Station, and items and gil on retainers that become inaccessible are not lost but need the service resubscribed to reach.

Refund notes

  • Square Enix's support pages state the Support Center is unable to offer refunds on subscriptions and advise cancelling before the recurring billing date; the system sends a notification to the registered email address before a subscription is charged. Square Enix's Game Time Card FAQ does not document any way to cancel or refund a card once its value has been redeemed. For the Retainer Service, releasing an additional retainer takes effect at the next billing cycle, and the guide states there are no refunds for releasing a retainer prior to the end of a billing cycle.

FAQ

Why is there no Cancel Subscription option in my Final Fantasy XIV Mog Station?

Square Enix documents that the "Cancel Subscription" option is only displayed when a recurring payment option is active on the account. If your game time came from a Game Time Card, there is no recurring payment to stop — the prepaid days simply run out and no further charge is made.

Does cancelling Final Fantasy XIV cut off my access straight away?

No. The support documentation states you will still be able to play for the remainder of the time left on the account — cancelling immediately after paying for a period still leaves you that time. Once the paid time expires the account is no longer subscribed, and you check its state on the Service Account Status page in the Mog Station.

I pay for Final Fantasy XIV through Steam — where do I cancel?

Square Enix puts subscription management in the Mog Station regardless of where you play. Steam Wallet is one of the accepted Mog Station payment methods, and Steam auto-renewal is handled there too. Start at Service Account Status in the Mog Station and use "Cancel Subscription".

Does cancelling my Final Fantasy XIV subscription also stop my extra retainer charges?

No — the Retainer Service is a separate optional charge, released in the Retainer Service section of the Mog Station. On credit card, Crysta or Steam auto-renewal the change takes effect at the next billing cycle with no refund for releasing a retainer before the cycle ends; on Game Time Card or Steam Wallet you cannot release an additional retainer during an active period. Items and gil on retainers that go inaccessible are not lost, but the service must be resubscribed to reach them.

Can I get a refund for the unused part of my Final Fantasy XIV subscription?

The support documentation says the Square Enix Support Center is unable to offer refunds on subscriptions, and advises cancelling before the recurring billing date. It also notes the system sends a notification to your registered email address before a subscription is charged, which is your practical warning to act. Check current pricing and your renewal date in the Mog Station.
