The charge is on your statement, the word "free" was on the signup screen, and you either cancelled on the last day or thought you had cancelled at all. This is the recovery playbook: what actually happened, ranked by how often it happens, the fix for each, and what to do when the store and the app point at each other. (If you are still trying to work out whether a trial is allowed to bill you in the first place, that is answered separately in can I be charged during a free trial.)

Step zero: is it a charge or a hold?

Before you chase a refund, check whether money actually left. Card issuers commonly place a small verification authorization โ€” often $0 or $1 โ€” when you attach a card to a trial. It shows as pending, it is not settled, and it normally drops off on its own within a few business days. If a pending line item has not disappeared after about a week, call your issuer and ask whether it was captured or is still just an authorization.

A real charge shows the full subscription price and posts to your statement. That is the one worth fighting.

Cause 1: you cancelled inside the 24-hour cutoff

This is the most common reason by a wide margin, and it is mechanical rather than unfair.

Apple's own instruction is to cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends. That is not padding โ€” the App Store begins the renewal attempt up to 24 hours before the current period ends. So the billing run can fire while your Subscriptions screen still shows the trial as active and still shows a future end date. Cancel at 10 p.m. on the final evening and the authorization may already be in flight.

The fix: stop treating this as a cancellation problem. Two separate actions are now required.

  1. Cancel so it does not renew again: Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, tap the subscription, tap Cancel Subscription. Confirm the entry now reads "Expires" rather than "Renews."
  2. Request a refund for the charge that already went through. Cancelling never refunds anything by itself.

Cause 2: the deadline is a timestamp, not a date

Gravity prevents this problem, it notifies you before every renewal so you're never caught off guard. Private, on your iPhone.

The Subscriptions screen shows a renewal date. It does not show the hour. But the renewal is anchored to the moment you subscribed โ€” start a trial at 9:40 p.m. and it converts at roughly 9:40 p.m., not at midnight. Combine that with the up-to-24-hours-early billing attempt and your practical deadline can land the previous evening, local time.

Time zones widen the gap. If your Apple Account is registered to a different country than the one you are living in, the date rendered on your screen and the date the billing system works from can differ by a day. Travel does the same thing in reverse.

The fix: treat the date shown in Subscriptions as one full day later than your real deadline. When you are recovering a charge, this is also your best refund argument โ€” say plainly that you cancelled before the end date displayed in your account.

Cause 3: you cancelled something that was not the billing

Three variants, all common:

  • You deleted the app. Deleting an app removes it from the device. The subscription lives in your Apple Account or Google Account and keeps billing.
  • You cancelled inside the app's own account settings, but billing runs through the store. In-app "delete account" flows frequently do not touch the store subscription.
  • You cancelled on the wrong account. A second Apple ID, a work account, or a Family Sharing organiser's account can hold the subscription. If it does not appear in your Subscriptions list at all, you are signed in as the wrong person.

The fix: confirm in the store, not in the app. On iPhone: Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions. If it is not listed on either, the merchant is billing your card directly and you cancel with them.

Cause 4: you were never eligible for the free trial

Introductory offers are granted once per account for a given subscription group. Resubscribe to an app you trialled a year ago and you are charged the full price immediately โ€” the signup screen may still advertise the trial generically. Separately, some offers described as "free trials" in marketing are discounted introductory periods that bill upfront at a reduced price.

The fix: check the receipt. If it billed on day one, this is what happened, and the refund request should say you believed you were starting a free trial.

Getting the money back

Billed through Apple

Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose I'd like to > Request a refund, pick a reason, select the charge, and submit. Purchase history defaults to the last 90 days, which is a practical ceiling on how far back you can reach. Apple reviews each request individually; approval is discretionary, not automatic, and you can check the status of the request afterwards from the same site.

Billed through Google Play

Google Play has a self-serve refund path for purchases made within the last 48 hours. Past that window, Google directs you to the app's developer, who can approve a refund under their own policy. Ask the developer in writing and keep the reply.

Billed directly by the merchant

Cancel first, then ask. Requesting a refund without cancelling means you get charged again next cycle. Our longer walkthrough of each route is in how to get a refund on a subscription.

The wording that gets approved

Short, factual, one clear reason. Do not select "I did not authorise this purchase" for a charge you did authorise but forgot โ€” that is a different claim and it is false.

On [date] I was charged [amount] for [app name]. I started the free trial on [start date] and cancelled on [cancel date], before the end date shown in my subscriptions list. I did not intend to move to a paid subscription and have not used the service since the charge. Please refund it.

Three things do the work: the dates, the statement that you cancelled before the displayed end date, and the absence of complaint. Long, angry submissions do not raise approval odds.

When the app says "contact Apple" and Apple says "contact the app"

This loop has a definite answer: find out who took the money.

For anything bought inside an iPhone app through the App Store, Apple is the merchant of record. The developer genuinely cannot issue that refund โ€” only Apple can. Your statement will read as an Apple billing descriptor, and the charge appears in your Apple purchase history. In that case the developer's "contact Apple" is correct, and their job is to cancel the subscription and confirm it in writing, which you then attach to your Apple request or appeal.

If you subscribed on the company's website and the descriptor is the company's own name, Apple has nothing to refund and "contact the merchant" is the correct answer. Check your Subscriptions list: if the subscription is not there, Apple is not billing you.

When the refund is refused

  • Appeal once, through the status page for your request, adding any written confirmation you obtained.
  • Send your credit card issuer a written billing error notice. Under the federal billing-error rules, the notice must reach the issuer within 60 days after the statement showing the charge; the issuer must acknowledge it within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days. Liability for genuinely unauthorised charges is capped at $50. Debit cards run under a different, generally weaker framework โ€” act faster.
  • A chargeback is not a cancellation. Cancel the subscription too, or the next renewal still hits.
  • File with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint if the dispute is about your card issuer's handling; they forward it and generally push for a response within 15 days.
  • File with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and with your state attorney general, if the trial terms were misleading. This feeds enforcement databases rather than returning your money, but misleading negative-option offers are exactly what those reports are for.

Preventing the next one

Cancel the trial the moment you start it. On Apple, cancelling does not shorten the trial โ€” access runs to the scheduled end date and simply does not convert. This single habit removes the deadline entirely. On Google Play, be aware the behaviour differs: cancelling a trial there can end access right away, so set a reminder instead if you want the full trial period.

Otherwise: set a calendar alert for two days before the displayed end date, not the day of. Note which account you used. And re-check the Subscriptions screen 24 hours after cancelling to confirm it says "Expires."

If keeping track of what renews and when is the actual problem, Gravity is a paid iPhone app ($19.99/month or $59.99/year) that walks you through cancelling subscriptions yourself, step by step, with no bank login.

Frequently asked questions

My Subscriptions screen still shows the trial ending tomorrow, so why was I charged today?

The end date on that screen is a date with no hour attached, and the renewal is anchored to the exact moment you subscribed rather than to midnight. Apple also begins the renewal attempt up to 24 hours before the period ends, so billing can start while the screen still shows a future end date. If your account is registered to a different country than the one you live in, the displayed date can also be a day off from the one billing works from.

The developer told me to contact Apple and Apple declined my refund. Who is actually responsible?

For a purchase made inside an iPhone app through the App Store, Apple is the merchant of record and is the only party that can issue that refund, so the developer is technically right. What the developer can still do is cancel the subscription and confirm in writing that they consider the charge unintended. Attach that written confirmation to an appeal on your existing Apple request rather than filing a new one.

If I cancel a free trial right after signing up, do I lose the rest of the trial?

On Apple, no. Cancelling stops the conversion to paid while access continues to the trial's scheduled end date, which is why cancelling immediately is the safest habit. Google Play behaves differently: cancelling a trial there can end your access straight away, so on Android set a reminder for a couple of days before the end date instead.
