Do I Lose My Watchlist If I Cancel a Streaming Service?

Usually not. A watchlist, your profiles, ratings, and continue-watching row are account data, not part of what your payment buys, so they survive as long as the account survives — and canceling a streaming subscription almost never deletes the account. Netflix, for example, keeps your Viewing Activity for 24 months after the account closes so it is there if you restart. Downloads are the real exception: they stop working the moment your paid access ends.

The useful distinction is between an entitlement and account data. Your payment buys the entitlement — the license to stream the catalog — and that is what stops at the end of the period you already paid for. Your watchlist, profiles, ratings, and viewing history are records attached to your login, sitting on the provider's servers, and canceling is processed as a billing event rather than an account closure. Spotify makes the pattern obvious: cancel Premium and the account switches to the free tier at the next billing date, and Spotify states that you keep your playlists and saved music when your account is free. Nothing was deleted; you simply lost the paid layer on top of it.

The window is not infinite, though, and it differs by service. Netflix's own cancellation page says it keeps your Viewing Activity for 24 months after your account closes, along with your recommendations, ratings, and account details, so a restart inside that window picks up where you left off. A service that keeps you on a permanent free tier, as Spotify does, effectively retains your library indefinitely because the account never closes at all. The number you need lives on the provider's help page or in its privacy policy, not in the cancel flow, so look it up before you cancel rather than after — and if the provider does not publish one, treat that silence as a reason to save your list yourself. Our general treatment of what companies keep, and how to make them delete it, is at /guides/what-happens-to-your-data-after-you-cancel.

Downloads are the exception, and they are unforgiving. Offline titles are DRM-licensed to an active subscription rather than to your account, so they die with your access, not with your data. Netflix states plainly that if you cancel your account, downloads on your device will be deleted, and that you have to be signed in to your account to play downloads offline. Practically, that means anything you were saving for a flight has to be watched before the paid period runs out. The same rule applies to music and audiobook apps: offline copies are cached under a license, not saved as files you own. Cloud DVR recordings behave even more harshly than downloads, and that case has its own page at /answers/what-happens-to-my-recordings-if-i-cancel.

Shared plans add a wrinkle. If you watch on someone else's family plan, your profile and its history live on that account, so when the owner cancels or you leave the group, your watchlist goes with an account you no longer reach. Starting your own subscription usually does not carry a profile across, so treat it as a fresh start. Three practical habits cover almost all of this: screenshot or export your list before you cancel, note the provider's retention window so you know how long you can stay away and still return to the same setup, and finish anything you have downloaded before the paid period closes. None of that requires you to keep paying — it just requires doing it in the days you have already bought. Whether you can come back at all, and at what price, is covered at /answers/can-i-rejoin-after-canceling.

Related questions

Does canceling a streaming service delete my profiles and viewing history?

Usually no. Canceling is a billing action, not an account closure, so profiles, ratings, and history normally stay attached to your login. Netflix says it keeps your Viewing Activity, recommendations, ratings, and account details for 24 months after the account closes. Separately requesting account deletion is what actually removes them.

Will my watchlist still be there if I resubscribe later?

It depends on how long you stay away. Inside the provider's retention window your list, profiles, and continue-watching row are normally restored when you resubscribe with the same login. Past that window the account is purged and you start clean, so check the retention period on the service's help page before you let a long gap open up.

Can I still watch my downloads after my subscription ends?

No. Downloaded titles are licensed to an active subscription, so they stop playing when your paid access ends — Netflix says that if you cancel your account, downloads on your device will be deleted. Watch anything you saved for offline viewing before the period you paid for runs out.

How long does a streaming service keep my account after I cancel?

It varies, and each provider publishes its own period. Netflix states 24 months for viewing activity and account details after the account closes. Services that drop you to a permanent free tier, such as Spotify, keep the account open indefinitely. Look for the number on the provider's cancellation help page or in its privacy policy.
