How to cancel TunnelBear

TunnelBear subscriptions bought on its website cancel from the account Overview tab: click Cancel, pick a reason, and wait for the downgrade to finish. Subscriptions bought in the iPhone or Android app must be cancelled through Apple or Google instead. Unlimited data continues until the paid period ends, and cancelling does not trigger a refund.

Fast answer

Where to start with TunnelBear

Open official help
Can you cancel online?
yes
Where to start
The "Overview" tab of your TunnelBear account at tunnelbear.com/account — unless you subscribed inside the iPhone or Android app, in which case start in your Apple or Google Play subscription settings.
Apple or Google billed?
Possible
Keeps access until
The end of the period you already paid for. TunnelBear documents that after cancelling you still have access to your unlimited data until the end of your subscription period; the account then reverts to the free 2GB-per-month tier rather than being closed.
Contract / fees
No fixed-term contract or early-termination fee is documented. Monthly and yearly plans renew at the end of each billing period unless cancelled. TunnelBear states that two-year and three-year plans are non-recurring and will not renew, so there is nothing to cancel on those. The Terms of Service say annual subscribers get a reminder 30 days before the billing date. TunnelBear for Teams can only be cancelled by an administrator.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Bought on the TunnelBear website (credit card)

  1. 1

Log into your account at tunnelbear.com/account and select the "Overview" tab.

  2. 2

Find the option to change or cancel your subscription and click "Cancel".

  3. 3

Select a reason for "Downgrading", then click "Cancel Subscription".

  4. 4

Wait about 10 seconds until the "Downgrading" step finishes.

  5. 5

Look for the confirmation email that TunnelBear sends once the cancellation has been processed.

  6. 6

Note that cancelling does not trigger a refund, and you keep unlimited data until the end of your subscription period.

Bought in the iPhone or iPad app (Apple)

  1. 1

TunnelBear does not handle App Store billing, so its help article does not document these steps — it links straight out to Apple's cancellation instructions. TunnelBear's Terms of Service say that if you subscribed through iOS you need to cancel through Apple.

  2. 2

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and tap your name.

  3. 3

    Tap Subscriptions.

  4. 4

    Tap the TunnelBear subscription.

  5. 5

Tap Cancel Subscription. Apple notes you might need to scroll down to find the button, and that if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled.

  6. 6

Apple documents the 24-hour deadline only for free or discounted trials (cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends). For a paid plan, cancel before your next renewal date.

  7. 7

Any refund request goes to Apple — TunnelBear's Terms of Service exclude purchases made through iOS from its money-back guarantee.

Bought in the Android app (Google Play)

  1. 1

TunnelBear does not handle Google Play billing — its help article and Terms of Service direct Google Play subscribers to cancel through Google, linking out to Google's own instructions.

  2. 2

On your Android device, go to your subscriptions in Google Play.

  3. 3

Select the TunnelBear subscription you want to cancel.

  4. 4

Tap Cancel subscription, then follow the instructions.

  5. 5

Google notes that uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription, and that you keep access for the time you have already paid for.

  6. 6

Any refund request goes to Google — TunnelBear's Terms of Service exclude purchases made through Google Play from its money-back guarantee.

TunnelBear for Teams (administrator only)

  1. 1

Only an administrator can cancel a TunnelBear for Teams account.

  2. 2

Go to your Teams account page and find the Overview section.

  3. 3

Click the gear icon beside your Team name.

  4. 4

Deactivate the team from there. Once deactivated the subscription no longer renews.

  5. 5

Your team can still use any data remaining on the account. Teams purchases are excluded from the 30-day money-back guarantee, and a Teams account cannot be self-deleted — contact Support for that.

Requesting a refund after cancelling

  1. 1

Cancelling never issues a refund on its own — TunnelBear treats it as a separate request.

  2. 2

Contact TunnelBear Support through the support form at tunnelbear.com/support.

  3. 3

For the 30-day money-back guarantee, get in touch within 30 days of your original purchase date; it covers only the first year of an annual plan bought directly from tunnelbear.com.

  4. 4

Monthly plans, Teams, and App Store or Google Play purchases are not eligible — for those, contact Apple or Google instead.

  5. 5

All refund requests are subject to review, and partial refunds are not assured.

Expect a retention offer

  • The confirmation flow is labelled "Downgrading" rather than cancelling, so the wording never plainly says the subscription is cancelled
  • You must select a reason for leaving before the "Cancel Subscription" button completes
  • Cancelling does not trigger a refund — reclaiming money is a separate request to Support

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • The subscription stops renewing, and TunnelBear says you should receive a confirmation email once the cancellation is processed.
  • You keep unlimited data until the end of the subscription period you already paid for.
  • After that the account drops to TunnelBear's 2GB-per-month free tier — the account itself is not closed and nothing is erased.
  • No refund is issued by cancelling; a refund is a separate request to TunnelBear Support and is subject to review.
  • You cannot delete the account while unlimited tunnelling time remains. Wait for it to expire and delete it yourself, or ask Support to delete it sooner. TunnelBear notes deletion happens immediately but can take up to 30 days to remove all traces from its servers.

Refund notes

  • TunnelBear's Terms of Service document a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee that applies only to the first year of annual subscriptions purchased directly from tunnelbear.com. It is not self-serve — you must contact TunnelBear Support within 30 days of the original purchase date. Monthly subscriptions, TunnelBear for Teams, and purchases made through iOS or Google Play are excluded, taxes and shipping/handling are not refundable, and partial refunds are not assured. Outside that window all amounts are stated as non-refundable, with case-by-case discretion. Cancelling does not trigger a refund on its own. App Store and Google Play purchases fall under those resellers' refund policies.

FAQ

Does cancelling TunnelBear delete my account or erase anything?

No. Cancelling only stops the renewal — the account stays open and drops to the 2GB-per-month free tier once your paid period runs out. Being a VPN, there is no vault or stored password data to lose. Deleting the account is a separate action, and TunnelBear actually blocks self-serve deletion while you still have unlimited tunnelling time left, so you either wait for it to expire or ask Support to delete it sooner. TunnelBear says deletion happens immediately but can take up to 30 days to clear all traces from its servers.

Does TunnelBear have a money-back guarantee, and can I claim it myself?

There is a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee, but it is narrower than most people expect and it is not self-serve. TunnelBear's Terms of Service limit it to the first year of an annual subscription bought directly from tunnelbear.com, and you have to contact Support within 30 days of your original purchase date. Monthly plans, TunnelBear for Teams, and anything bought through the App Store or Google Play are excluded. Taxes are not refundable and partial refunds are not assured.

Do I need to cancel a two-year or three-year TunnelBear plan?

No. TunnelBear states that two-year and three-year plans are non-recurring and will not renew, so there is no subscription to cancel — the plan simply runs out. Only monthly and yearly plans renew at the end of each billing period unless you cancel them. If you are on an annual plan, TunnelBear's terms say it sends a reminder 30 days before your billing date.

Why does the TunnelBear cancel screen say "Downgrading" instead of confirming a cancellation?

That is the wording TunnelBear uses in its own documented flow, and it trips people up. After clicking Cancel you pick a reason for "Downgrading", click "Cancel Subscription", then wait roughly 10 seconds for the downgrade to finish. It is the real cancellation, not a plan change. The reliable confirmation is the email TunnelBear says it sends once the cancellation has been processed — if that never arrives, check the Overview tab again.

I subscribed to TunnelBear inside the iPhone app — do I cancel with TunnelBear or with Apple?

With Apple. TunnelBear's Terms of Service say that if you subscribed through iOS or Android you need to cancel through Apple or Google, and its help article links straight out to their instructions rather than documenting steps of its own. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap TunnelBear, then tap Cancel Subscription. Apple's 24-hour deadline applies only to free or discounted trials; for a paid plan, cancel before your next renewal date. Refunds for those purchases go to Apple or Google too, since TunnelBear's guarantee excludes them.
