How to cancel The Gym Group UK

The Gym Group UK's rolling monthly membership is cancelled in the member's area or the app, under 'my membership'. Do it at least 4 working days before your next collection date or the regular monthly fee is still taken. Recurring card payers have to use Live Chat instead. Saver memberships are fixed term and cannot be cancelled after 14 days.

yes
Where to start

Apple or Google billed?
Not commonly documented
Keeps access until
The end of the period you have already paid for. The Gym Group documents a four-working-day cut-off before your next Billing Cycle rather than a mid-month refund, so the practical end point is your next collection date, not the day you stop attending.

Contract / fees
Two membership shapes that behave nothing alike. The rolling monthly membership has no minimum term: The Gym Group's membership agreement tells Direct Debit members to "cancel your direct debit four (4) working days before your Billing Cycle", and recurring card members to "contact our member service team at least four (4) working days before your Billing Cycle" instead. Saver Up Front memberships are fixed-length — Ultimate and Standard bought outright for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months — and the agreement's Saver Up Front terms state that these "[m]emberships cannot be frozen", that "[f]ollowing the 14th day after your purchase, you will have no other opportunity to cancel ahead of the membership end date", and that "[r]efunds will not be given for any unused memberships". The Gym Group's own support article repeats that "saver members do not have the ability to freeze their membership" because "[a] saver membership is a contract with The Gym Group for a set period of time". Student memberships are separately defined as having "a fixed duration of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months" and carry their own student terms. If you bought a discounted multi-month deal, assume you are in it until the end date.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you pay by Direct Debit on a rolling monthly membership

  1. 1

Open The Gym Group app, or sign in to the member's area on thegymgroup.com.

  2. 2

Go to the 'my membership' section — The Gym Group's support article says that is where all the details are.

  3. 3

Choose to cancel your membership and follow the prompts.

  4. 4

Do it at least 4 working days before your next collection date. The Gym Group says to cancel "4 working days before your next collection date to avoid being charged your regular monthly fee".

  5. 5

Keep the confirmation and check your next statement to be sure the collection stopped.

  • The Gym Group's article points members to "the mobile app or logging into the member's area on our website, just head to the 'my membership' section".
  • The four days are working days measured against your Billing Cycle, so check your collection date rather than counting from today.

If you pay by recurring card payment rather than Direct Debit

  1. 1

Do not keep hunting in the app — The Gym Group states that if you pay by recurring card payment, "our helpful Customer Service team will need to assist you via Live Chat".

  2. 2

Open Live Chat from thegymgroup.com, or raise a ticket at support.thegymgroup.com/support/tickets/new.

  3. 3

Give your name, the email on the account and your gym PIN, and say clearly that you are cancelling.

  4. 4

Do it at least 4 working days before your Billing Cycle — the agreement asks card members to "contact our member service team at least four (4) working days before your Billing Cycle".

  5. 5

Save the chat transcript or ticket reference as your proof of the date you gave notice.

If you are on a fixed-length Saver Up Front or Student membership

  1. 1

Find your purchase date. The 14-day window in the agreement runs from the date of purchase, not from your first visit.

  2. 2

If you are inside 14 days, contact Customer Service via Live Chat or a support ticket and cancel now — this is the only documented exit.

  3. 3

If you are past it, accept that the membership runs to its end date. The agreement's Saver Up Front terms say that after the 14th day following purchase "you will have no other opportunity to cancel ahead of the membership end date".

  4. 4

Do not try to freeze it instead: The Gym Group states saver members do not have the ability to freeze their membership, and its agreement lists "Memberships cannot be frozen" among the Saver Up Front terms.

  5. 5

Diarise the end date. The Gym Group says a Saver Membership "will automatically end on the last day of your membership term and will not renew" — it does not roll onto a monthly rate, so you would need to rejoin and buy a new membership to keep training.

  • The agreement also states "[r]efunds will not be given for any unused memberships", so a Saver Up Front membership you never used is not refundable once the 14 days are gone.
  • Student memberships are defined in the same agreement as having "a fixed duration of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months" and are subject to separate student terms, so check the paperwork you were issued rather than assuming the Saver Up Front wording applies to you word for word.

If you are within your first 14 days and want money back

  1. 1

Contact Customer Service through Live Chat or a support ticket at support.thegymgroup.com/support/tickets/new.

  2. 2

Say you are cancelling within the first 14 days of membership and are asking for a refund.

  3. 3

Expect a proportionate figure rather than the full amount if you have already trained — The Gym Group says "[i]f you've used the gym within this time, your refund will be proportionate."

  4. 4

Get the refund amount and the cancellation date confirmed in writing.

  • The Gym Group states it is "only able to offer a refund if you cancel your membership within the first 14 days of your membership". Outside that window the notice period is the mechanism, not a refund.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

There is no cancel option under 'my membership'.

Check how you pay. The Gym Group routes recurring card payers to Live Chat rather than self-service, so the option genuinely is not there for them. If you are on Direct Debit and still cannot see it, raise a ticket at support.thegymgroup.com/support/tickets/new so your notice date is recorded.

I cancelled but was charged anyway.

Count the working days. The Gym Group needs the cancellation at least 4 working days before the collection date, and less than that means "payment may still be taken". Send Customer Service the timestamp of your cancellation and ask them to confirm the end date in writing.

I cancelled by accident and want to undo it.

There is no undo, but The Gym Group says you can rejoin "with the same email address and gym PIN". Be aware the price resets — your membership "will be based on the prices and joining fee available at the time you sign up", so check the figure shown before you confirm.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Billing stops from the next Billing Cycle, provided your cancellation landed at least 4 working days before it.
  • With less than 4 working days' notice, the payment can still be taken and the membership runs another month.
  • Cancelling frees up the account rather than deleting it — The Gym Group says you can rejoin "with the same email address and gym PIN".
  • Rejoining does not restore your old price. The Gym Group states your membership on return "will be based on the prices and joining fee available at the time you sign up".
  • Check the next statement. The collection stopping is the only real confirmation.

Refund notes

  • The Gym Group states it is "only able to offer a refund if you cancel your membership within the first 14 days of your membership", and that "[i]f you've used the gym within this time, your refund will be proportionate."
  • Outside that window the documented mechanism is notice, not money back: cancel at least 4 working days before your Billing Cycle so the next fee is not collected. There is no proration of a payment already taken.
  • For fixed-length Saver and Student memberships the membership agreement is blunt: "Refunds will not be given for any unused memberships."
  • During the cooling-off period, if you have used the gym The Gym Group reduces the refund by "the higher of a) one-day pass rate (for your gym at the time you request to cancel) or b) pro-rata rate based on your last gym visit within the 14-day Cooling Off Period".

FAQ

How do I cancel a The Gym Group UK monthly membership?

In the app or the member's area on thegymgroup.com, under the 'my membership' section. The Gym Group's support article says you can "find all the details by visiting the mobile app or logging into the member's area on our website, just head to the 'my membership' section". Do it at least 4 working days before your next collection date.

How many days' notice does The Gym Group UK need to cancel?

Four working days. The Gym Group asks members to cancel "4 working days before your next collection date to avoid being charged your regular monthly fee", and its membership agreement repeats the same four-working-day requirement ahead of your Billing Cycle. Because these are working days, weekends and bank holidays stretch the real deadline.

Can I cancel a The Gym Group UK saver membership early?

Only inside the first 14 days. The Gym Group describes a saver membership as "a contract with The Gym Group for a set period of time", and its membership agreement says that after the 14th day following purchase "you will have no other opportunity to cancel ahead of the membership end date". Saver memberships also cannot be frozen.

Why can't I cancel The Gym Group UK online if I pay by card?

Because recurring card payments are handled by staff rather than self-service. The Gym Group states that if you pay by recurring card payment "our helpful Customer Service team will need to assist you via Live Chat", and its agreement asks card members to contact the member service team at least four working days before their Billing Cycle. Direct Debit members keep the self-serve route.

Does The Gym Group UK refund a membership I never used?

Only within the first 14 days. The Gym Group says it is "only able to offer a refund if you cancel your membership within the first 14 days of your membership", and that the refund is proportionate if you have already trained. For fixed-length saver memberships its agreement states plainly that "[r]efunds will not be given for any unused memberships."
