How to cancel Nuffield Health UK

Nuffield Health UK gym cancellations must be in writing to your home centre — email it, or fill in a cancellation form there. One full calendar month's notice applies: notice received on the 1st ends the membership that month, notice after the 1st ends it on the last day of the following month. Discounted 12-month memberships work differently.

Nuffield Health's fitness and wellbeing terms set one full calendar month's written notice as the standard: "if you have chosen, or changed to, our standard monthly payment option, you can cancel your membership by giving us one full calendar months' notice in writing. This also applies to Vitality members." A Discounted Monthly membership carries a 12-month commitment period on top: you "must give us one full calendar month's written notice to cancel your membership at the end of your 12-month membership commitment period", and the terms add that "[w]e must receive this notice at any time on or before the first day of the last full calendar month of your commitment period" — miss that date and you do not come out at the end of the term. The alternative is blunt: "you can cancel your membership straightaway if you pay for the remaining full calendar months of your commitment period". A Discounted Prepaid 12-month membership behaves in the member's favour at the end of the term rather than rolling on silently: the terms say that to commit for another 12 months "you must renew your 12-month commitment period before the 15th day of the final month of your then current commitment period", and that if you do not renew or change to another payment option "we will assume that you want to cancel your membership and your membership will end at the end of your then current commitment period". Nuffield Health also publishes a Fair and Honest Contract page listing rights that sit "in addition to the standard terms", including the ability to cancel within a commitment period on health, redundancy and relocation grounds.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you are on the standard monthly payment option

  1. 1

Identify your home centre — Nuffield Health says all cancellation requests "need to be received in writing by your home gym", so it goes to that centre, not to head office.

  2. 2

Check which membership you are on. Standard monthly needs one full calendar month's written notice; a discounted 12-month membership has a commitment period attached.

  3. 3

Put it in writing: email the request to your home centre, or go in and complete a cancellation form at reception. If you joined online, your joining receipt email contains a link to a request-to-cancel form.

  4. 4

Time it around the 1st. If your centre receives the notice on the first day of a month the membership ends on the last day of that same month; received any later, it ends on the last day of the following month.

  5. 5

Keep the acknowledgement. Nuffield Health says that if you cancel in writing by post or email it will "send you an acknowledgement letter or email to confirm the date that your membership will end", and that if it does not arrive you "must assume that we have not received your cancellation notice" and send another. If you cancel on a form at your home centre there is no acknowledgement — the form itself shows your end date, so keep a copy.

  6. 6

Check the final Direct Debit collects as expected and then stops.

  • Nuffield Health's guidance is that "[t]he best way to do this is by emailing your request to your home gym or by visiting and completing a cancellation form in person".
  • The one full calendar month's notice applies to Vitality members on the standard monthly option too.

If you are inside a discounted 12-month commitment period

  1. 1

Find your commitment end date — the discounted rate is priced against a 12-month commitment period.

  2. 2

Decide which of the two documented routes you want: give one full calendar month's written notice to end at the end of the commitment period — which the terms require them to receive "on or before the first day of the last full calendar month of your commitment period" — or leave now by paying for the remaining full calendar months of the period.

  3. 3

Send the notice in writing to your home centre by email, or complete the form at reception.

  4. 4

Say explicitly which route you are taking, so you are not quoted a settlement figure you did not ask for.

  5. 5

Ask for the acknowledgement letter or email confirming the end date before you consider it done.

  • The terms allow an immediate exit: "you can cancel your membership straightaway if you pay for the remaining full calendar months of your commitment period".
  • If yours is a Discounted Prepaid 12-month membership instead, the terms end it automatically at the end of the commitment period unless you renew before the 15th of the final month.

If illness, injury, pregnancy, redundancy or a house move is the reason

  1. 1

Check the grounds Nuffield Health publishes on its Fair and Honest Contract page: cancelling if you can't train due to illness, injury or pregnancy (available "even within the first 3 months"), if you are made redundant, or if you move to a location where there is not a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre.

  2. 2

Gather your evidence first — Nuffield Health notes that proof may be required for health-related claims.

  3. 3

Put the request in writing to your home centre with the evidence attached, naming the ground you are relying on.

  4. 4

Ask whether a freeze would suit you better; Nuffield Health's cancel-or-freeze page offers freezing on the same grounds for up to 12 months, by completing a form at your home gym.

  5. 5

Keep the acknowledgement confirming your end date.

  • These rights sit "in addition to the standard terms", so they apply on top of the ordinary one-month notice rather than instead of it.
  • The relocation threshold is published, not vague: the Fair and Honest Contract page says "your new address must be 5+ miles away from a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre", and the terms allow cancellation within a commitment period "[i]f you move house more than five miles from any centre" or if "[y]our office relocates more than 5 miles from any centre".
  • Freezing on the same grounds is offered too — Nuffield Health's cancel-or-freeze page says you may freeze "for up to 12 months, even within the first 3 months of joining", by completing a form at your home gym.

If you are still within 14 days of joining online

  1. 1

Act inside the window — the terms say that if you purchased your membership online "you have a legal right to change your mind within 14 days of joining and receive a refund".

  2. 2

Give the notice in writing: send it to your home centre's manager, or fill in a cancellation form at your home centre.

  3. 3

If you joined online, the request-to-cancel form linked in your joining receipt email is the quickest written route.

  4. 4

State the date clearly, since the 14 days run from when your membership starts.

  5. 5

Keep the acknowledgement and check the refund lands.

  • This right is tied to buying online. Joining at reception is a different situation, so check your own paperwork.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I told reception I was leaving but was billed anyway.

A conversation is not notice. Nuffield Health requires the request in writing and received by your home gym, so email the centre or complete the cancellation form at reception. Your notice date is the date the centre receives the written request, which is also what sets your end-of-month date.

I sent notice on the 2nd and now owe an extra month.

That is the documented rule rather than an error: notice received on the first day of the month ends the membership at the end of that same month, and anything later ends it at the end of the following month. If you are close to month end, hold the email and send it on the 1st.

I cannot train because of injury but I am inside my commitment period.

Use Nuffield Health's published grounds rather than paying out the commitment. Its Fair and Honest Contract page allows cancelling or freezing "even within the first 3 months" if you can't train due to illness, injury or pregnancy, and notes proof may be required. Send the evidence in writing with the request to your home centre.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • If you cancelled by post or email, Nuffield Health sends an acknowledgement letter or email confirming the date your membership will end — and its terms say that if you do not get one you must assume the notice was never received and send another. A cancellation form completed at the centre gets no acknowledgement; the form shows the end date instead.
  • Access continues to the last day of the month your notice takes effect, so you keep training through the notice period.
  • The Direct Debit collects for the notice month and then stops. Check the following statement.
  • Add-on benefits are handled separately — the terms require one full calendar month's notice for those too, received on or before the 15th day of the month.
  • A freeze is not a cancellation. If you froze rather than cancelled, the membership restarts and starts billing again at the end of the freeze.

Refund notes

  • The ordinary route is notice, not refund. Nuffield Health's terms describe a membership ending at the end of a calendar month after one full calendar month's written notice, and document no proration of a month already paid for.
  • The clear refund right is for online joiners: "If you have purchased your membership online, you have a legal right to change your mind within 14 days of joining and receive a refund."
  • Leaving a discounted 12-month membership early is a payment, not a refund — the terms let you cancel straightaway "if you pay for the remaining full calendar months of your commitment period".
  • A Discounted Prepaid 12-month membership simply ends at the end of the commitment period if you do not renew before the 15th of the final month, so there is nothing to reclaim provided you let it run out.

FAQ

How do I cancel my Nuffield Health gym membership?

In writing to your home centre. Nuffield Health says all cancellation requests "need to be received in writing by your home gym", and that "[t]he best way to do this is by emailing your request to your home gym or by visiting and completing a cancellation form in person". Members who joined online also get a link to a request-to-cancel form in their joining receipt email. Email gets you an acknowledgement letter confirming your end date; an in-centre form does not, so keep a copy of it.

How much notice does Nuffield Health need to cancel a gym membership?

One full calendar month in writing. Nuffield Health's terms say that on the standard monthly payment option "you can cancel your membership by giving us one full calendar months' notice in writing", and that this also applies to Vitality members. Its Fair and Honest Contract page states the same requirement plainly.

Can I cancel Nuffield Health during a 12-month commitment period?

Yes, but you pay for it. The terms let you "cancel your membership straightaway if you pay for the remaining full calendar months of your commitment period", or give one full calendar month's written notice to end at the end of the commitment period instead. Nuffield Health separately allows cancellation within a commitment period for illness, injury, pregnancy, redundancy or a qualifying relocation.

Can I cancel my Nuffield Health membership online or in the app?

Not through a self-serve cancel button. The documented routes are an email to your home centre or a cancellation form completed there. The one online-ish path is for members who joined online, whose receipt email contains a link to a request-to-cancel form. Everything still has to be in writing and received by your home gym.

What is the difference between freezing and cancelling a Nuffield Health membership?

Freezing pauses the membership; cancelling ends it. Nuffield Health asks you to complete a form at your home gym to freeze, allows freezes of up to 12 months, and offers freezing on the same grounds as cancelling — illness, injury, pregnancy or redundancy. A frozen membership still exists and restarts, so if you want out permanently you need the written cancellation notice instead.
