Cancellation Confirmation Is Not Optional

Subscription services are notorious for multi-step cancellation flows where it's easy to think you've canceled when you haven't. You clicked through several screens, but did you hit the final confirm button? Did you close the browser before the last step?

Never assume a cancellation is complete without verification. Here's how to confirm for every subscription type.

Confirming Apple-Billed Subscription Cancellations

Method 1: Check the Subscriptions screen

  1. Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions
  2. Tap the subscription
  3. If successfully canceled, you'll see: "Your subscription expires on [date]" instead of a renewal date
  4. The subscription moves to the "Expired" section on its expiry date

Method 2: Confirmation email Apple sends a cancellation confirmation email to your Apple ID email address. Search your inbox for "subscription canceled" or the service name.

If neither of these shows the subscription as canceled — it isn't canceled. Repeat the cancellation steps.

Step 1: Look for a confirmation email The company should send a cancellation confirmation email immediately. Search your inbox for the company name + "cancel" or "subscription."

Step 2: Log back into your account After canceling, log back into the service. Your account status should show:

  • "Subscription canceled — expires [date]"
  • "Your membership ends on [date]"
  • "Free plan" or "Inactive"

If your account still shows "Active" with a future renewal date, the cancellation may not have processed.

Step 3: Check the billing section In Account → Billing or Subscription settings, look for:

  • Auto-renewal: Off
  • Next billing date: None
  • Status: Canceled

The 24-Hour Verification Rule

After any cancellation, log back into the service 24 hours later to verify the status. Some systems take hours to process cancellations and may show active status immediately after canceling.

Verify on Your Bank Statement (1–2 Billing Cycles)

The definitive confirmation is your bank statement. After the billing date that would have been your next charge:

  • If no charge appears: successfully canceled
  • If a charge appears: something went wrong — take immediate action

Always monitor your bank for 1–2 full billing cycles after any cancellation.

Confirmation Checklist

Use this after every cancellation:

  • Received a cancellation confirmation email
  • Logged back into account and confirmed canceled/expired status
  • Auto-renewal shows as "Off" in account settings
  • Calendar reminder set to check bank statement on the next billing date

What to Do If Confirmation Is Unclear

If you canceled but aren't sure whether it went through:

  1. Contact the company support: "I canceled on [date]. Can you confirm my subscription status and that I won't be charged on [renewal date]?"
  2. Get the confirmation in writing (email or chat transcript)
  3. Take a screenshot of your account status

How Gravity Helps With Confirmation

When you log a subscription in Gravity, you control its status. When you cancel a service, update it in Gravity by deleting it or marking it as canceled. This gives you a personal record of what's been canceled and when — so when a bank statement shows a surprise charge months later, you have the context to investigate immediately.
