How to cancel YNAB

If you subscribed directly at ynab.com, cancel yourself: open Account Settings in the web app, scroll down, and click Cancel Subscription. Billing and subscription settings aren't available in the mobile apps, so use a browser. Subscribed through Apple or Google? Cancel in that store instead. Access runs to the end of the paid period; monthly payments aren't refunded.

Menus and labels can change. If the steps below don’t match what you see, use the official help link on this page.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Cancel a YNAB subscription billed by YNAB (web app)

  1. 1

Sign in at https://app.ynab.com/settings on a computer. On a phone, YNAB's documented workaround is to copy and paste that same web app address into a mobile browser, because billing and subscription information is not available through the mobile app settings (only in the web app).

  2. 2

From the web app, click the name of your plan, located at the top of the left sidebar.

  3. 3

    Select Account Settings.

  4. 4

Scroll down and click the Cancel Subscription button.

  5. 5

YNAB states that cancelling lets you access YNAB through the end of your current subscription period, and that until that point you have an option to resume the subscription. Once it expires, the account will not renew.

  6. 6

If the steps do not work, YNAB's documented support route is to tell the chatbot you need a human or send them an email — not a specific cancel-by-email address.

Cancel a YNAB subscription billed by Apple

  1. 1

Open https://apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, the link YNAB gives App Store subscribers. Note that YNAB's help centre states billing and subscription settings are not available in the YNAB mobile apps, so the cancellation cannot be done inside the YNAB iOS app — it must be done through Apple.

  2. 2

Sign in with your Apple Account, select YNAB in the subscriptions list, and choose Cancel Subscription.

  3. 3

YNAB notes that cancelling lets you keep access through the end of the current subscription period, with an option to resume until it expires.

  4. 4

For a refund, YNAB directs you to Apple's process at https://support.apple.com/en-us/118223 and says to allow 24 to 48 hours for Apple to update you on your request.

  5. 5

YNAB notes that Apple handles its own billing, so you are subject to Apple's refund terms and must contact Apple directly with billing questions.

Cancel a YNAB subscription billed by Google Play

  1. 1

Go to https://play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, the link YNAB gives Play Store subscribers, and sign in with the Google Account used to subscribe. (On a phone you can reach the same list through the Play Store app under Payments and subscriptions, though YNAB itself only documents the web link.)

  2. 2

Select YNAB and cancel the subscription.

  3. 3

YNAB states that cancelling lets you keep access through the end of the current subscription period, with an option to resume until it expires.

  4. 4

YNAB's refund article states that refunds through Google must be requested within 48 hours of subscribing, using Google's refund request flow at https://support.google.com/googleplay/workflow/9813244.

  5. 5

YNAB also notes that deleting your YNAB account automatically cancels the subscription with Google so you are not charged on the renewal date.

Delete your YNAB account to trigger a prorated annual refund

  1. 1

Understand the tradeoff first: YNAB documents this as the path to a prorated annual refund, and it permanently deletes your account and plans rather than just stopping the renewal. (Source: the requesting-a-refund article for the refund policy; the how-to-manage-your-subscription article for the deletion steps.)

  2. 2

If Apple bills you, YNAB says to cancel your subscription with iTunes first so they do not charge you on the renewal date after your account is deleted.

  3. 3

Sign in on the web and click the name of your plan in the top left corner.

  4. 4

    Click on Account Settings.

  5. 5

Turn off Two-Step Verification if you have it enabled.

  6. 6

Scroll down to the Delete Account section at the bottom and confirm you'd like to permanently delete the account.

  7. 7

YNAB states that deleting the account automatically ends the subscription and, for annual subscribers, triggers a prorated refund for unused time back to the card originally charged. If it has not processed within ten business days, contact support. Monthly subscriptions are not eligible for refunds.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • You keep access to YNAB through the end of the subscription period you have already paid for.
  • Until that period expires, YNAB shows an option to resume the subscription.
  • Once it expires the subscription does not renew and you lose access to your plan until you resubscribe.
  • Your account and data are not deleted when you cancel; YNAB removes them later under its Data Retention Policy and says it reminds you before that point.
  • Deleting your account is a separate, permanent action available in Account Settings, and is the step YNAB documents for a prorated annual refund.

Refund notes

  • YNAB documents separate refund paths by billing channel. Direct annual subscribers: deleting the YNAB account ends the subscription and triggers a prorated refund for unused time, returned to the card originally charged; YNAB asks you to contact support if it has not processed within ten business days. Direct monthly subscribers: monthly subscriptions are not eligible for refunds, and you keep the plan until the end of the paid month. App Store subscribers: refunds go through Apple's own process, with YNAB advising 24 to 48 hours for Apple to respond. Play Store subscribers: YNAB's article states refunds must be requested from Google within 48 hours of subscribing.

FAQ

Can I cancel YNAB from the iPhone or Android app?

No. YNAB's help center states that billing and subscription information is not available through the mobile app settings, only in the web app. Its documented workaround is to copy and paste https://app.ynab.com/settings into a mobile browser and cancel from the Account Settings page there. If Apple or Google bills you, cancel in that store instead.

Does canceling YNAB delete my budget data?

No. YNAB says canceling stops the renewal but does not delete your account or plans, and that you can resume the subscription until the period expires. If the subscription stays expired, YNAB deletes the account data on the timeline in its Data Retention Policy, and says it sends a reminder before that happens.

Will YNAB refund an annual subscription if I cancel partway through?

YNAB's refund article says the prorated refund for unused time on an annual plan is triggered by deleting your YNAB account, not by canceling alone. The refund goes back to the card originally charged, and YNAB asks you to contact support if it hasn't processed within ten business days. Monthly subscriptions are not eligible.

I subscribed to YNAB through the App Store and there's no cancel button in my account. Why?

Because Apple manages that subscription. YNAB directs App Store subscribers to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions to cancel — the cancellation is done on Apple's side, not inside the YNAB iOS app. For a refund, YNAB points to Apple's report-a-problem process at support.apple.com/en-us/118223 and says to allow 24 to 48 hours for Apple to respond.

Do I have to cancel a YNAB trial to avoid being charged?

It depends where you started it. YNAB says its own 34-day trial collects no payment information, so there is typically nothing to cancel and it can simply expire. Trials started through the App Store or Play Store convert to a paid subscription, so YNAB says you must cancel through that store before the trial ends.
