How to cancel Virgin Active UK

Virgin Active UK's membership FAQ names three ways out: visiting your club, calling 020 8167 6480, or emailing info@virginactive.co.uk. What you cannot do is cancel in the app — its app FAQ says "You cannot cancel via the app", even though freezing is offered there. Your notice period comes from the contract you were given when you joined.

Where to start
Any of the three routes Virgin Active's membership FAQ names: your club in person, the phone number it publishes for cancellations (020 8167 6480, printed as 0208 167 6480 on its contact page), or an email to info@virginactive.co.uk. Its contact page also carries a request-a-call-back form at virginactive.co.uk/forms/contact-us.

Virgin Active does not publish this. What its FAQ does confirm is that "[i]f you cancel your contract with us, you will not be able to use the app once your cancellation is in effect." Your actual end date follows the notice period written into your own membership contract, which is why getting the end date confirmed in writing matters here more than at most chains.
Contract / fees
Virgin Active does not publish general membership terms on its website — its legal pages cover club rules, offer terms, complaints and privacy, but not the membership agreement itself. Asked "How long is my contract?", Virgin Active's own FAQ answers: "This depends on which membership you have and whether you joined us on a special promotion. All of this information is set out in the terms and conditions when you joined us!" What it does publish is joining-offer terms, and those document the shape: its August–September 2026 family offer states a "12-month minimum commitment", that "[p]ayment must be made by Direct Debit", and that both the free period and the paid period "will form part of your Initial Commitment Period (as set out in your membership contract)". The same terms refer to an "applicable 14-day cooling-off period". So the honest answer is that your own membership contract is the only authority for your notice period, and you should find it before you go into club — nothing on virginactive.co.uk will tell you.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

By email or phone — the routes that leave you a record

  1. 1

Email info@virginactive.co.uk, or call 020 8167 6480. Virgin Active's membership FAQ names both: "You can cancel your membership by visiting your Virgin Active club, calling us on 020 8167 6480 or sending us an email at info@virginactive.co.uk".

  2. 2

Give your name, your membership ID number, your home club and the date, and say plainly that you are cancelling your membership.

  3. 3

If you do not know your membership ID, Virgin Active says it is at the bottom of emails it sends you, or in the app under Profile and 'Manage account'.

  4. 4

Ask for written confirmation by email showing your end date and your final payment date.

  5. 5

Cancel personal training separately — Virgin Active says to "speak to the product manager in your club directly" for that.

  • Email is worth preferring over the phone and over an in-club conversation: it timestamps the date you gave notice, which matters because Virgin Active does not publish the notice period you are being measured against.
  • Its contact page also offers a request-a-call-back form at virginactive.co.uk/forms/contact-us and notes it is "currently experiencing a high volume of membership queries", so build in time rather than leaving it to the week your commitment ends.

In club, with the Experience team

  1. 1

Go to your club and ask for the Experience team. Virgin Active's app FAQ says "You cannot cancel via the app. To cancel, please speak to the Experience team in club".

  2. 2

Take your membership details and, if you have it, the membership agreement you were issued at joining.

  3. 3

State the date you are giving notice and ask them to record it.

  4. 4

Ask for the cancellation in writing before you leave, with the exact end date and the final payment date on it.

  5. 5

Follow it up with an email to info@virginactive.co.uk repeating the date you gave notice, so there is a written trail either way.

  • The in-club route on its own leaves you no record. The written follow-up is what makes the notice date provable.
  • Virgin Active's app FAQ lists what the Profile section can do — update contact and address details, change password, change home club, upgrade, freeze, guest passes, notifications, rewards tier — and cancelling is explicitly not on that list.

If you are still inside your Initial Commitment Period

  1. 1

Find your joining paperwork and identify the Initial Commitment Period — Virgin Active's published offer terms describe a 12-month minimum commitment on eligible memberships.

  2. 2

Check whether a free or discounted joining period was included, since those terms say such a period still "form[s] part of your Initial Commitment Period (as set out in your membership contract)".

  3. 3

Ask Virgin Active — in club, on 020 8167 6480 or by email — what ending the contract early would cost, and on what grounds an early exit is allowed under your specific agreement.

  4. 4

If you joined very recently, ask about the "applicable 14-day cooling-off period" the offer terms refer to.

  5. 5

Get whatever you are told in writing before you agree to anything.

  • Any merchandise credit you were given on joining is clawed back on an early exit — the offer terms say "the amount used will be deducted from any membership fee refund if you end your membership early".

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

I have looked everywhere in the app and there is no cancel option.

There isn't one. Virgin Active documents that cancellation is not an app function. Stop searching and use one of the three routes it does name — your club, 020 8167 6480, or info@virginactive.co.uk — and be careful not to press freeze by mistake, which the app does offer.

Nobody will tell me my notice period.

It lives in your own joining paperwork, which is exactly what Virgin Active's FAQ says. Search your email for the membership terms sent when you joined — it says a copy of your contract is emailed to members who join online. If you cannot find it, email info@virginactive.co.uk asking for a copy of your membership agreement before you discuss cancelling, so you can check the notice period against the document rather than a verbal answer.

I cancelled in club but the payment came out again.

Without written confirmation you have nothing to point at, which is why the confirmation matters. Go back with the date and, if you have it, the name of the person you spoke to, and send the same detail to info@virginactive.co.uk so the notice date is on record. Escalate through the complaints process on the legal-stuff pages if the account still shows as active.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Virgin Active confirms the app goes with the membership: "If you cancel your contract with us, you will not be able to use the app once your cancellation is in effect."
  • Your end date is set by the notice period in your own membership contract, not by a published site-wide rule.
  • Written confirmation is your only proof of the date notice was given, which is why an emailed cancellation is worth more here than a phone call. Chase it if it does not arrive.
  • Personal training does not end with the membership — Virgin Active says to cancel that with the product manager in your club directly.
  • Keep watching the Direct Debit. The collection stopping is the real signal that the cancellation was processed.

Refund notes

  • Virgin Active does not publish a refund policy for membership cancellation on its UK site.
  • Its joining-offer terms refer to an "applicable 14-day cooling-off period", and are the only place it documents a refund mechanic publicly: where joining credit has been spent, "the amount used will be deducted from any membership fee refund if you end your membership early".
  • Anything beyond that has to come from your own membership contract or from Virgin Active directly — in club, on 020 8167 6480, or at info@virginactive.co.uk. Ask for the figure in writing rather than accepting a verbal number.

FAQ

Can I cancel my Virgin Active UK membership in the app?

No. Virgin Active's own FAQ on the app's Profile section lists what you can do there — update contact details, change your password, change home club, upgrade, freeze — and then states "You cannot cancel via the app. To cancel, please speak to the Experience team in club". Freezing is available in the app; cancelling is not.

How do I cancel a Virgin Active UK membership?

Three ways, according to Virgin Active's own membership FAQ: "You can cancel your membership by visiting your Virgin Active club, calling us on 020 8167 6480 or sending us an email at info@virginactive.co.uk". Email is the one that leaves you a dated record of when you gave notice. Personal training is separate — Virgin Active says to speak to the product manager in your club directly.

How long is my Virgin Active UK contract?

Virgin Active does not publish one answer. Its FAQ says "This depends on which membership you have and whether you joined us on a special promotion. All of this information is set out in the terms and conditions when you joined us!" Its published joining offers describe a 12-month minimum commitment on eligible memberships, forming part of an Initial Commitment Period set out in your own contract.

Does Virgin Active UK publish its membership cancellation terms online?

No. Virgin Active's legal pages cover club rules, club etiquette, the complaints policy, monthly offer terms, referral offer terms, member rewards terms, the supplier code of conduct, website terms of use and privacy — the membership agreement itself is not among them. The practical consequence is that you cannot check your notice period against a public document, so find the terms you were issued at joining before you cancel.

What happens to the Virgin Active app when my membership is cancelled?

You lose it. Virgin Active states that "[t]he Virgin Active app is for our members only" and that "[i]f you cancel your contract with us, you will not be able to use the app once your cancellation is in effect." Access ends when the cancellation takes effect, not when you give notice, so anything you want to keep should be saved first.
