How to cancel Linear

Cancel Linear in the app: go to Settings > Administration > Billing, where a workspace admin can change or cancel the subscription. The cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing month or year — Linear gives no mid-subscription refunds. Nothing is deleted; the workspace drops to the free plan.

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

If you manage the Linear workspace subscription yourself

  1. 1

Sign in to Linear as a workspace admin.

  2. 2

Go to Settings > Administration > Billing.

  3. 3

Change or cancel the subscription from that page.

  4. 4

Check the effective date — Linear applies subscription updates at the end of the billing month (monthly plans) or the end of the billing year (yearly plans).

  • Linear states "We do not provide refunds for cancellations mid-subscription" and recommends starting on a monthly plan if you are not ready to commit to a full year.
  • The same Billing page is where Linear documents updating your payment information, changing the billing email, and viewing past invoices and charges.

If you want Linear to confirm the cancellation in writing

  1. 1

Email billing@linear.app asking to cancel the subscription — Linear's Terms of Service list notifying Linear at that address alongside modifying the subscription in your account as ways to cancel.

  2. 2

Include the workspace name and the billing email on the account so Linear can identify the subscription.

  3. 3

Linear's terms condition this route on Linear confirming the cancellation in writing, so keep the reply as your record.

  4. 4

Expect a downgrade rather than a shutdown: Linear's terms state the subscription remains accessible but is automatically downgraded to the Free Version with diminished features and functionality.

  • Linear's terms give a 60-day window to report a billing error, measured from the closing date on the first billing statement in which the error appeared.

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

You cannot find the Billing page in Linear.

Linear puts it at Settings > Administration > Billing and documents plan changes as something workspace admins do. If Administration is missing from your settings sidebar, you are not an admin on that workspace — ask an admin to cancel, or have them grant you admin first.

After cancelling Linear you can no longer create issues.

That is the documented free-plan behaviour, not a bug. Linear states that when a subscription is cancelled, a workspace with over 250 issues can no longer create new ones. Nothing is deleted, and re-subscribing from Settings > Administration > Billing restores issue creation.

You cancelled a yearly Linear plan early and want the unused months refunded.

Linear does not do this. Its billing docs state it does not provide refunds for cancellations mid-subscription, and the plan simply runs to the end of the billing year. If you think you were billed in error rather than just cancelling early, Linear's terms give you 60 days from the first statement showing the error to raise it.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • The subscription runs to the end of the current period — Linear applies the change at the end of the billing month or billing year rather than immediately.
  • Linear states "Nothing will be deleted" — the workspace stays accessible on the free plan.
  • If the workspace has over 250 issues, you can no longer create new issues.
  • All members become Admins of the workspace, since everyone is an Admin on free plans.
  • Linear's terms describe this as an automatic downgrade to the Free Version rather than a closure of the workspace.

Refund notes

  • Linear's billing docs state plainly: "We do not provide refunds for cancellations mid-subscription." Its Terms of Service add that payment obligations are non-cancelable and, except as expressly stated, non-refundable. Linear's own advice is to start on a monthly plan and switch to yearly later if you are unsure about committing to a full year. Billing errors must be reported no later than 60 days after the closing date on the first statement showing the error.

FAQ

How do I cancel my Linear subscription?

Sign in as a workspace admin and go to Settings > Administration > Billing — Linear documents that page as where workspace admins change or cancel a subscription. Linear's Terms of Service also allow cancelling by notifying billing@linear.app, provided Linear confirms the cancellation in writing. Either way the change takes effect at the end of the subscription period.

Does cancelling Linear delete my issues and workspace?

No. Linear's billing docs state "Nothing will be deleted." The workspace stays accessible on the free plan. Two things do change: if you have over 250 issues you can no longer create new ones, and all members become Admins of the workspace because everyone is an Admin on free plans.

Will Linear refund an annual plan I cancel partway through?

No. Linear's billing docs state "We do not provide refunds for cancellations mid-subscription," and its Terms of Service describe payment obligations as non-cancelable and non-refundable except as expressly stated. Linear's suggested workaround is to start on a monthly plan and only switch to yearly once you are ready to commit.

Who is allowed to cancel a Linear workspace subscription?

Workspace admins. Linear's billing docs state that workspace admins can change or cancel a subscription from Settings > Administration > Billing. If Administration is not in your settings sidebar, you are not an admin on that workspace — ask an admin to make the change.

When does a Linear cancellation actually take effect?

At the end of the subscription period. Linear states "Subscription updates take effect at the end of the subscription period" — the end of the billing month if you are on a monthly plan, or the end of the billing year if you are on a yearly plan. You keep paid access until then.
