How to cancel Equinox

Equinox lists four cancellation routes: your online account at equinox.com, email to Cancellations@Equinox.com, in club with a club manager, or mail as described in your Membership Agreement. Notice periods vary by state and live in your individual agreement, not on the public site. Equinox pitches a freeze instead. New York fined it $600,000 in 2025 over hard-to-cancel memberships.

Contract / fees
Equinox does not publish its membership term, notice period or early-termination terms on its public pages. Its FAQ and Member Policies repeatedly defer to your individual Membership Agreement, stating that "notice periods vary by state and in some states, there may be additional cancellation methods available, please review your Membership Agreement for requirements specific to your Membership." Equinox memberships are commonly sold with an initial commitment period, with early-release conditions (such as relocation or medical grounds) and any early-termination charge defined in that agreement rather than on the website. Because the binding terms are contract-specific, request a copy of your Membership Agreement from Concierge@Equinox.com before you cancel, and confirm the exact notice window and effective date in writing. Equinox also notes that "in certain states, if you cancel soon after an increase in Membership Dues, you may have additional rights."

Step-by-step cancellation

These steps only appear when the flow was verified against an official provider or platform source.

Cancel in your Equinox online account

  1. 1

Go to equinox.com and sign in to your account at https://www.equinox.com/account

  2. 2

Open the membership or billing section of your account

  3. 3

Look for the cancellation option — Equinox's FAQ confirms you may cancel "by logging into your account on Equinox.com"

  4. 4

Submit the cancellation request and note the submission date, since the notice period runs from when Equinox receives your notice

  5. 5

Save or screenshot the confirmation, and check your Membership Agreement for the notice period that applies in your state

  6. 6

Verify the change later in the EQX+ app under "Membership & Billing" > "Membership Status"

Cancel by email to Equinox Cancellations

  1. 1

Email Cancellations@Equinox.com — Equinox's FAQ lists this as an accepted cancellation channel

  2. 2

Include your full name, member number, home club and the date you want the cancellation to take effect

  3. 3

State clearly that this email is your written notice of cancellation

  4. 4

Ask Equinox to confirm in writing the date it received your notice and the date billing stops

  5. 5

Keep the sent email and any reply as proof of the notice date

  6. 6

If you do not receive a reply, follow up and escalate to Concierge@Equinox.com or your club's General Manager

Cancel in club with a club manager

  1. 1

Visit your home club and ask to speak with a club manager — Equinox's FAQ states you may cancel "in club with a club manager"

  2. 2

Ask to see your Membership Agreement so you can confirm the notice period and any commitment terms that apply to you

  3. 3

Complete and sign the club's cancellation paperwork

  4. 4

Expect an offer to freeze rather than cancel; Equinox's FAQ recommends freezing as an alternative, so decline it if you want to end the membership outright

  5. 5

Ask for a dated, written or emailed copy of the completed cancellation before you leave

  6. 6

Confirm the final billing date and check your statement after the notice period ends

Cancel by mail as described in your Membership Agreement

  1. 1

Check your Membership Agreement for the mailing address and any format requirements — Equinox's FAQ says you may cancel "via mail as described in your Membership Agreement"

  2. 2

If you do not have a copy, request one from Concierge@Equinox.com before you write

  3. 3

Write a dated letter with your full name, member number, home club and a clear statement that you are cancelling your membership

  4. 4

Send it by a tracked or certified method so you have proof of the delivery date, since the notice period runs from receipt

  5. 5

Retain the mailing receipt and tracking record

  6. 6

Follow up by email if you do not receive acknowledgement within a couple of weeks

Expect a retention offer

  • Equinox's own FAQ recommends freezing instead of cancelling: "If you are going on an extended vacation or unable to use the club for a brief period, we recommend that you freeze your membership, instead of cancelling."
  • The in-club route requires sitting down with a club manager, a live-agent conversation rather than a form submission
  • Binding terms (notice length, commitment period, early-termination charges) are not published publicly and are only in your individual Membership Agreement, so you often cannot check your exit terms before starting
  • State-by-state variation in notice periods and accepted methods shifts the burden of confirming valid cancellation onto the member
  • The New York Attorney General found in 2025 that Equinox's cancellation process was "complex, difficult, and time-consuming" and that terms were buried in fine print

Common problems

Only official-source troubleshooting notes are included here.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

  • Your membership stays active and billable through the notice period defined in your Membership Agreement, so expect at least one more dues charge in most cases
  • Club access, group fitness booking and EQX+ app membership features end when the cancellation takes effect
  • Unused personal training, Pilates, nutrition sessions and spa treatments are forfeited, as Equinox states these sales are final and non-refundable except in limited circumstances set out in your Membership Agreement
  • You can check whether the change has landed in the EQX+ app: tap the icon in the upper left of the home page, then "Membership & Billing" to view "Membership Status"
  • Equinox allows reactivation later at your local club or by emailing Concierge@Equinox.com, though rejoining may be at current rates and terms
  • Keep your written cancellation confirmation and the date Equinox received your notice, since the notice clock runs from receipt

Refund notes

  • Equinox's Member Policies state that "if you have any unused Sessions at the time your membership is cancelled, you will not be entitled to a refund except for certain limited circumstances expressly set forth in your Membership Agreement," and that "all sales of Sessions are final and non-refundable, except as required by law." The same applies to spa treatments. Dues billed during the notice period are generally not refunded, since membership access continues through that period. Refund eligibility is not self-serve; it is handled through your club or Concierge@Equinox.com and governed by your Membership Agreement and state law.

FAQ

Can I cancel my Equinox membership online?

Yes, in most cases. Equinox's FAQ lists logging into your account on Equinox.com as one of four accepted cancellation channels, alongside emailing Cancellations@Equinox.com, cancelling in club with a club manager, or mailing notice as described in your Membership Agreement. Equinox adds that notice periods vary by state and that some states may allow additional methods, so confirm the requirements in your own Membership Agreement before relying on the online route.

How much notice does Equinox require to cancel a membership?

Equinox does not publish a single figure. Its FAQ states that notice periods vary by state and directs members to review their Membership Agreement for the requirements specific to their membership. The notice clock generally runs from the date Equinox receives your notice, not the date you decide to quit, so send your cancellation through a channel that gives you a dated record and ask Equinox to confirm the receipt date and final billing date in writing.

Do I have to cancel Equinox in person at my home club?

No longer, as a general rule. Equinox's FAQ explicitly lists the online account portal and email to Cancellations@Equinox.com in addition to cancelling in club with a club manager or by mail. This follows a May 2025 New York Attorney General settlement in which Equinox paid $600,000 over hard-to-cancel memberships and agreed to provide an easy-to-use cancellation mechanism. Some state-specific requirements may still apply under your Membership Agreement.

Should I freeze my Equinox membership instead of cancelling it?

Equinox actively suggests it, so treat the offer as a retention step rather than neutral advice. Its FAQ says that if you are on an extended vacation or briefly unable to use the club, it recommends freezing instead of cancelling. Its Member Policies note you may freeze if you are medically unable to use any club or for another statutorily required reason, and that members cannot access any club while frozen. Freezing keeps the agreement alive, so choose it only if you genuinely intend to return.

Will Equinox refund unused personal training sessions when I cancel?

Generally no. Equinox's Member Policies state that if you have unused Sessions when your membership is cancelled you will not be entitled to a refund except in limited circumstances expressly set out in your Membership Agreement, and that all sales of Sessions are final and non-refundable except as required by law. The same applies to spa treatments. Use up any prepaid sessions before your cancellation takes effect, or raise refund questions with your club's General Manager or Concierge@Equinox.com.
