Subscriptions are designed to bill automatically — it's the core of the business model. Auto-renewal is the default. You have to actively intervene to stop it. This page covers every method available, from the cleanest (canceling properly) to the nuclear option (blocking at the card level).
Method 1: Cancel the Subscription Directly (Always Try First)
The cleanest way to stop automatic charges is to cancel the subscription through the service:
For Apple-billed subscriptions: Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → tap subscription → Cancel Subscription
For direct-billed subscriptions: Log into the service's website → Account → Subscription/Billing → Cancel
When this works — which it does in most cases — the charge stops at the next billing date and you keep access until the period ends.
Method 2: Turn Off Auto-Renewal Without Canceling Immediately
While you're here — Gravity tracks every subscription on your iPhone and reminds you before each renewal. Free to download, no bank sync.

Many services offer an option to "disable auto-renewal" rather than cancel immediately. This lets you keep access through the end of the current period without being charged again. It's functionally a future cancellation.
For Apple subscriptions: Same path as canceling — when you tap a subscription, you'll see both "Cancel Subscription" (ends at period end) and sometimes "Turn Off Auto-Renew" as options.
For direct billing: Look for "Auto-Renewal," "Recurring Billing," or "Subscription Settings" in the account portal.
Method 3: For Apple Subscriptions — Use Screen Time to Block New Subscriptions
To prevent future subscriptions from being created without your knowledge (useful for family accounts or shared devices):
- Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases
- Set In-App Purchases to Don't Allow
This blocks new subscription sign-ups on the device entirely. Existing subscriptions are not affected.
Method 4: Dispute With Your Bank (For Charges After Cancellation)
If you've canceled a subscription and it continues to charge you:
- Log into your bank or credit card app
- Find the specific charge
- Tap Dispute or Report a Problem
- Select the appropriate reason (canceled subscription / unauthorized charge)
- Provide cancellation confirmation as evidence
Your bank will investigate and typically rule in your favor within 30–60 days.
Method 5: Request a New Card Number
If a service continues to charge you despite cancellation and dispute attempts, contact your bank and request a card number replacement. The new card number makes it impossible for the old merchant to charge you.
Downside: You'll need to update your payment method with every legitimate service you use. This is a last resort.
Method 6: Use Virtual Card Numbers to Block Specific Merchants
Services like Privacy.com allow you to create virtual credit card numbers tied to your real account. You can:
- Create a virtual card for a specific merchant
- Pause or close that virtual card at any time, instantly blocking future charges from that merchant
- Your real card is unaffected
This is the cleanest targeted solution for a merchant that won't stop charging — you can block exactly that merchant without touching anything else.
Method 7: For iPhone — Remove the Payment Method From Apple ID
If you want to prevent any future Apple subscription charges:
- Settings → [Your Name] → Payment & Shipping
- Tap the payment method
- Tap Remove
Warning: This will also stop any legitimate active subscriptions that are still billing. Only do this if you want to stop all Apple billing, not just one subscription.
The Checklist When Automatic Charges Won't Stop
If a subscription keeps charging after you've tried to cancel:
- Verified the cancellation was confirmed (do you have a confirmation email?)
- Checked whether the charge is Apple-billed or direct-billed
- Logged into the account to confirm "canceled" status
- Contacted the company by phone with cancellation documentation
- Disputed the charge with your bank
- Requested a new card number (if all else fails)
Gravity provides a log of your active subscriptions with start dates — making it immediately clear when a charge appears for something that should have been canceled.
