When you subscribe to any app through the App Store, Apple becomes the billing middleman. This creates one major advantage: you have a single, centralized place to cancel any App Store subscription — no matter which app it is. You don't need to hunt through each app's settings.
Here are all the methods to cancel App Store subscriptions.
Method 1: Via iPhone Settings (Fastest)
- Open Settings
- Tap your name (Apple ID) at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Tap the subscription you want to cancel
- Tap Cancel Subscription → Confirm
This works for any subscription billed through your Apple ID, including apps, games, Apple's own services, and third-party services like Grammarly, Calm, Headspace, and hundreds of others.
Method 2: Via App Store App
While you're here — Gravity tracks every subscription on your iPhone and reminds you before each renewal. Free to download, no bank sync.
★★★★★ Free to download · No credit card required
- Open the App Store
- Tap your profile photo in the top right
- Tap your name at the top → Subscriptions
- Find and tap the subscription → Cancel Subscription
This opens the same subscription management page as the Settings route — either path works.
Method 3: Via Mac (for iPhone subscriptions)
You can manage iPhone subscriptions from a Mac if both devices are signed in to the same Apple ID:
- Open App Store on Mac
- Click your name in the bottom left → View Information
- Click Manage next to Subscriptions
- Find the subscription → Edit → Cancel Subscription
What You See on the Subscriptions Screen
After navigating to your subscriptions, you'll see:
- Active tab: Currently billing subscriptions. These have a cancel button.
- Inactive / Expired tab: Previously canceled or expired subscriptions. These show when they ended.
Each subscription card shows:
- App name and subscription tier
- Next renewal date
- Price
Tap any subscription for details on changing your plan, upgrading, downgrading, or canceling.
What If a Subscription Doesn't Appear?
If a subscription is missing from the App Store list, it means Apple is NOT the billing processor. You subscribed on a website, or through a different payment method. You'll need to cancel directly through the service:
- Log into the service's website
- Go to Account → Subscription or Billing settings
- Look for a Cancel option
Troubleshooting: "Cancel Subscription" Button Is Missing
Possible causes:
- You're in a free trial — for some trials, the cancel button doesn't appear until the trial converts to paid. In this case, wait until the trial ends to see the cancel button, or contact Apple Support.
- Managed by family organizer — if you're in Apple Family Sharing and the subscription is managed by the family organizer, only they can cancel it.
- Annual subscription paid upfront — some subscriptions show the next renewal date without a cancel button until closer to the renewal date. Try tapping on the subscription name for more options.
- Wrong Apple ID — you may have multiple Apple IDs. The subscription might be on a different account.
How to Cancel Apple's Own Subscriptions
Apple's services are also managed from the same Subscriptions screen:
- Apple Music → appears as "Apple Music"
- iCloud+ → appears as "iCloud" with storage tier
- Apple TV+ → appears as "Apple TV"
- Apple Arcade → appears as "Apple Arcade"
- Apple News+ → appears as "Apple News+"
Canceling any of these follows the exact same steps as any other App Store subscription.
After Canceling Any App Store Subscription
- You receive a confirmation email from Apple
- Access continues until the current period ends
- The subscription moves to the "Expired" tab
For any subscriptions NOT billed through Apple — including direct credit card charges from services like Netflix (if you signed up on the web), gym memberships, and direct bank charges — use Gravity to log and track those. Together, the App Store Subscriptions screen and Gravity give you complete visibility.
