How to cancel Stash

To cancel your Stash plan, go to app.stashinvest.com/manage-subscription/manage and follow the prompts, or open the Stash app and use your plan or subscription settings. Link an external bank first, because closure sells your investments and returns the cash. Closure takes up to 10 business days once every required step is done.

The closure seems stuck or is taking longer than expected.

Stash names the usual blockers: pending deposits, unsettled trades, promotional funds, and required IRA forms. Recent deposits may take up to 6 business days to become withdrawable and some promotional funds may not be available for up to 90 days.

You have no external bank account linked to Stash.

Stash says to contact support@stash.com to request a refund check for the remaining balance. Checks typically take 7–10 business days to arrive, so confirm your mailing address before you close.

You hold a Stash IRA and want to move it elsewhere.

Stash says you must complete the IRA Distribution Form in the app to set mandatory tax withholding before closure processes, and that withdrawals before age 59½ may owe income tax plus a 10% additional IRS tax. To move it instead, start an ACAT or direct transfer with the receiving broker first.

What happens after you cancel?

Post-cancellation details like access, downgrade behavior, and refund caveats are shown only when the provider documents them.

Stash sells the investments in a taxable account and returns the proceeds to your externally linked bank account; a Banking balance is sent by bank transfer, or mailed as a check typically within 7–10 business days if no bank is linked.
Closure can take up to 10 business days after all required steps are complete, and Stash emails you when the account is completely closed.
Any unpaid fees are deducted from your balance before the remaining funds are sent.
Tax documents can still arrive later — Stash says it will email you when they're available and you can log in with the same username and password to access them.
Stash says you may be able to open a new plan later, but closed accounts, sold investments, and completed transfers generally cannot be reversed.

Refund notes

Stash says it will refund any prepaid portions of your annual Stash subscription fee in accordance with the terms of your Advisory Agreement. Remaining cash is normally sent to your linked external bank; if a check is required, Stash says delivery typically takes 7–10 business days after processing.
