Why Subscriptions Can Be Especially Tricky for Older Adults

Subscription services have proliferated alongside digital technology β€” and for many older adults who didn't grow up with streaming, app stores, and cloud storage, the billing structures can be confusing. Add in aggressive marketing, auto-renewal fine print, and company names that don't match the service you remember signing up for, and it's easy to see why subscriptions accumulate unnoticed.

This guide is written in plain language to help seniors β€” or family members helping seniors β€” get a clear picture of what's being paid for, find the unnecessary charges, and get them stopped.

Step 1: Gather Your Statements

The starting point is getting a clear view of what's actually leaving your account. You'll need:

  • Bank statements from the last 3 months (either paper statements or online)
  • Credit card statements from the last 3 months
  • If you have an iPhone: your Apple ID subscription list (more on that below)

Go through each statement and circle or write down any charge that appears more than once β€” same amount, same company, appearing each month. These are your recurring subscriptions.

Step 2: Check Your iPhone Subscriptions (If You Have an iPhone)

While you're here β€” Gravity tracks every subscription on your iPhone and reminds you before each renewal. Free to download, no bank sync.

Apple keeps a list of all subscriptions billed through your iPhone. Here's how to find it:

  1. Open the Settings app (the grey gear icon)
  2. Tap your name at the very top
  3. Tap Subscriptions

You'll see a list of everything Apple charges you for, including the amount and renewal date. If anything on the list is unfamiliar or not being used, it can be canceled directly from this screen.

Step 3: Check Your Email for Subscription Receipts

Open your email and search for the word "receipt" or "subscription" or "renewal." This surfaces confirmation emails and billing notices that represent active subscriptions.

If you need help doing this on a phone or computer, any family member or trusted friend can assist.

Common Subscriptions Older Adults Often Discover They No Longer Need

Based on what seniors commonly find in their statements:

  • Computer security software (McAfee, Norton) β€” often auto-renewed annually at $40–$100, sometimes without any benefit for the user
  • Old internet service charges β€” some services from the early internet era continue billing even when no longer used
  • Phone add-ons β€” caller ID extras, voicemail services, or protection packages added to landline or cell bills years ago
  • Identity protection services β€” signed up after a news story about data breaches, now forgotten
  • News or magazine subscriptions β€” digital subscriptions to publications that might also arrive in print form
  • Multiple streaming services β€” particularly common in households where different family members added services over time

Step 4: Decide What to Keep and What to Cancel

For each subscription you've found, ask yourself:

  • "Do I use this regularly?"
  • "Do I even remember what this is?"
  • "If someone offered me this service for the first time today, would I sign up?"

If the answer to any of these is no, it's a candidate for cancellation.

Step 5: Cancel What You Don't Need

For Apple/iPhone subscriptions: From the Subscriptions screen in Settings, tap the subscription and then tap Cancel Subscription at the bottom. You'll receive an email confirming the cancellation.

For everything else: Call the company directly using the phone number on your statement. You can simply say: "I'd like to cancel my subscription. My name is [your name] and I can give you my account information." They may try to offer you a discount to stay β€” you're allowed to say no and ask them to proceed with the cancellation.

If making phone calls is difficult, a family member can call on your behalf with your account details available.

Important: After canceling, check the following month's statement to confirm the charge has stopped.

Senior Discounts Worth Knowing About

Before canceling some services, it's worth asking if a senior discount is available:

  • Streaming services: Some offer senior discounts β€” always worth asking
  • Amazon Prime: Seniors on government assistance may qualify for a reduced rate ($7.49/month vs. $14.99)
  • Gym memberships: SilverSneakers is a fitness benefit included in many Medicare Advantage plans β€” if you're a member, you may not need a separate gym subscription
  • Phone plans: Senior-specific plans from carriers (T-Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Verizon) are often significantly cheaper

Keeping It Simple Going Forward

Once you've cleared out the unnecessary subscriptions:

  • Ask a family member to help you check your statements once every 3 months
  • Keep a simple written list of the subscriptions you're keeping, with their monthly cost
  • If you use an iPhone, the Subscriptions page in Settings gives you an up-to-date list anytime you want to check

Gravity is an iPhone app that can help with this β€” you log your subscriptions once, and it shows you what's coming up for renewal. It's free, simple, and doesn't require any bank connection. A family member can help set it up during a visit.

You're Not Alone in This

Subscription billing is confusing for everyone. The fact that charges have accumulated unnoticed isn't a sign of any failing β€” it's the result of services that are deliberately designed to be invisible until you look for them. Looking is the hard part, and you've already started.
