Someone gives you a subscription for your birthday — a year of Spotify, a Netflix gift card, a streaming service for the holidays. It's a thoughtful gift. But buried in the fine print is something worth knowing: many gifted subscriptions auto-renew at full price when the gift period ends.
You receive a gift. The gift period ends. Your card gets charged. You didn't even notice it was coming.
Here's how to enjoy subscription gifts without the surprise charges.
How Gifted Subscriptions Work (Varies by Service)
Netflix: Netflix gift cards add credit to an account. When the credit runs out, billing automatically resumes to the default payment method on file. If there's no payment method, the account pauses rather than charges — but you'll get prompted to add one to continue.
Action: Remove your payment method during the gift period if you're not sure you want to continue. You won't get charged when the credit ends.
Spotify: Spotify gift cards add Premium time to your account. Auto-renewal behavior depends on whether you had a Premium subscription before the gift. If you did, the gift extends your period and then billing resumes. If you're a new Premium user via gift, you may need to add a payment method to continue — but the flow prompts you before charging.
Action: Check your Spotify account settings to see your renewal status and whether a payment method is saved.
Apple One / Apple Subscriptions: Apple gift cards add balance to an Apple ID. Subscriptions draw from this balance. When the balance is depleted, if there's a payment method on file, charges resume automatically to that method.
Action: Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Payment & Shipping to see what payment method is on file. Remove it if you don't want auto-charges after your balance is used up.
Amazon Prime: Amazon Prime gifts give a specific period of membership. After the gift period, if you have auto-renewal enabled (which is the default), your credit card on file will be charged.
Action: Log into Amazon → Account → Prime Membership → Manage Membership → End Membership (or disable auto-renewal).
Other subscription services (Hulu, Disney+, etc.): Gift subscriptions typically run for the gifted period, then auto-renew. Policies vary. Check the account settings page within the first week of activating to understand the renewal terms.

★★★★★ Free to download · No credit card required
When you receive any subscription gift:
- Activate it — if it requires a code, use it promptly
- Note the end date — write it down or add it to your calendar
- Check the payment method on file — is your card saved? Will it charge automatically when the gift ends?
- Decide now — do you want to continue after the gift ends? If yes, leave the payment method. If no, either remove it or set a firm reminder to cancel before the end date
- Set a calendar alert for 5 days before the gift period ends
Giving Subscription Gifts Responsibly
If you're giving a subscription gift:
- Give gift cards, not direct subscriptions. A gift card puts control in the recipient's hands — they can choose to continue or not. Signing someone up for a subscription and adding your card is a kindness that becomes a burden.
- Mention the auto-renewal. A quick note — "just so you know, it will ask you if you want to continue when the gift period ends" — is a thoughtful heads-up.
- Consider the service they actually use. A subscription to a service the recipient already pays for is still meaningful (it covers their next period) but check first — some services don't allow gift credits to apply to existing paid accounts.
When You Get Charged Unexpectedly for a Gifted Subscription
If you've been charged after a gift period and didn't intend to continue:
- Cancel the subscription immediately to stop future charges
- Contact customer support — "I received this as a gift and didn't realize it would auto-renew. I'd like a refund for this charge." First-time requests are often approved.
- For Apple-billed subscriptions, use reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund
Track Gift Subscriptions Like Any Other
Gravity treats gifted subscriptions the same way as paid ones — log it with the end date, and you'll get a reminder before the charge hits. Whether something was given or paid for, the renewal is the same event and deserves the same awareness.
