The NYT Cancellation Is Deliberately Difficult — Here's How to Get Through It

The New York Times is well-known for making cancellation harder than it should be. Depending on your plan, cancellation may require a live chat or phone call — they don't always offer a simple one-click cancel button. Here's exactly what to expect and how to navigate it.

Method 1: Cancel via Website (Easiest When Available)

  1. Go to nytimes.com and sign in
  2. Click your account icon → Account
  3. Click Subscription in the left sidebar
  4. Look for Cancel Subscription or Manage Subscription

Note: Not all NYT plans allow online-only cancellation. If you don't see a cancel button, you'll need to use the chat or phone method below.

Method 2: Cancel via Live Chat

While you're here — Gravity tracks every subscription on your iPhone and reminds you before each renewal. Free to download, no bank sync.

  1. Go to nytimes.com/subscription/cancel
  2. A live chat box will appear — click to start
  3. Tell the agent: "I'd like to cancel my subscription."
  4. They will attempt to offer you a discounted rate to stay. You can decline by saying: "Thank you, but I'd like to proceed with the cancellation."
  5. Confirm the cancellation and ask for a confirmation email

The chat route is usually faster than the phone route. Agents are available during business hours (Monday–Friday, 7am–10pm ET; weekends 7am–3pm ET).

Method 3: Cancel by Phone

Call 1-800-698-4637 (NYT subscriber services).

  • Have your email address and subscription details ready
  • Tell the agent you want to cancel
  • Expect a retention offer — likely 50–75% off for 3–6 months
  • Politely decline if you don't want to continue and ask for cancellation confirmation

Method 4: If You Subscribed Through Apple

If you pay through the App Store (your Apple ID), NYT's website cannot cancel you — you need to cancel through Apple:

  1. Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions
  2. Find New York Times and tap it
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription → Confirm

Check your payment method in the NYT account settings to know which applies to you.

What to Expect: The Retention Offer

The NYT's retention team is effective. Expect an offer of:

  • 50–75% off your current rate for 3–6 months
  • Sometimes a free month to reconsider

If you're canceling for cost reasons and the offer is genuinely attractive, it's worth considering. If you're canceling because you don't read it, no discount changes that calculation.

If you want to take the discount without staying long-term: accept it, set a calendar reminder for when the discount period ends, and cancel before the full price resumes.

What Happens After You Cancel

  • Access continues until the end of your current billing period
  • Your account and reading history are retained (useful if you re-subscribe)
  • Wordle and games remain accessible — NYT Games has a separate subscription; canceling the main NYT subscription doesn't cancel Games
  • NYT Cooking is also a separate subscription — canceling one doesn't cancel the other

Check All NYT Subscriptions You Might Have

The NYT has expanded into multiple products, each with its own subscription:

  • NYT News (main subscription)
  • NYT Games (Wordle, crossword, Connections)
  • NYT Cooking
  • NYT Audio (The Daily podcast premium)

If you subscribed to multiple NYT products, each needs to be canceled separately. Check your Apple Subscriptions page and the NYT account page to see all active products.

Getting a Refund

For recent charges you didn't intend to make:

  • Apple-billed: reportaproblem.apple.com → Report a Problem
  • Direct-billed: Contact NYT support directly and request a refund within 7 days of the charge

Refund success rates are higher when you contact within a few days of the charge and haven't been using the service.

Track It in Gravity

Once you've canceled, log the cancellation in Gravity and remove it from your active subscriptions. If you accepted a discounted retention offer, add it with the promotional end date — and set a reminder before the discount period ends so you can decide whether to cancel or keep paying the full price.
